Just did the Bikes Blues and BBQ event in Fayetteville AR, 1000mi. on roads to and from (took 2 routes) were terrible. As stated a lot of patches, crumbling edges and in MO a lot of detours down secondary roads as they try to fix some of the worst, quite a bit of construction in the high dollar zones as Springfield and Branson.
I live in the Northest...roads up here have sucked for years. There's just no money to repair them and when they do..its only patches. Couple that with hurricane Irene this year and you have the worst road conditions I've ever seen. Its scarey!!!!! That's why we usually ride down south every year for a couple of weeks....just to find out what real roads are like
Its not just the south....Vermont roads will very easily get you dead if you are not paying attention to every crevice and truck swallowing pot hole! Although Vermont roads have never been great, they have at least been patched. This year...nothing...and then the flooding finished them off. Took whole bridges, roads houses and washed them right off the face of the land! The best roads in this part of the country seem to be in New Hampshire. Nice and smooth every where I travel in that state.
In '95, I quit my job, went out & got a CDL, and did some OTR trucking, just to try something different. I had a TV fall off the shelf in the sleeper one day, on 40 in Arkansas! The ruts were so deep that I used to get the steers into them, set the cruise, and go back into the sleeper & take a nap while going across AR! (NYs a close 2nd. PAs not too far behind!)
From: Western Illinois, land of bad roads, and corrupt politicians
Illinois........ need I say more? Our Governors spend time in office.... then do time in prison. I think it's a job requirement. When the roads do get fixed, they last about 2 years.

The roads here in Nor Cal are in real bad shape. La Honda rd./St.Hwy 84 one of the best rides, was just patched. It looks like they went to home depot and got some cold patch and filled the pot holes. Now you have loose gravel in the sweepers. Don't get me started on the freeways. The quality is down.
We have terrible roads here too. But this last year or two ever turn you take, there's construction going on. It seems no matter were you go, there they are. An inconvenience sometimes, but a great sight too. It will be nice to have some of these horrific roads fixed. At least for awhile. Anywhere that you get snow, the roads get chewed up really fast from chains.
