Trouble
it sounds like you have a bad rubber hose for the rear brakes.they will deteriorate over time and allow the fluid to go only one way.i would replace the hose, flush the old fluid out, refill with fresh and bleed the rear brake system.as for the noise in the primary, did you check the compensator nut on the crank?it could possibly be loose.
Have a question, yesterday while out on my 1985 FLTC the rear brake grabbed, not enough to lock the rear tire but enough to make me stop as was grabbing really hard, after pulling off of the side of the interstate, the rear brake was smoking and the rear tire would no longer roll...after maybe 10 minutes, the pedal goes all the way to the floor with no brake at all and the rear brake released...so am riding it back home and hear this awful clanking in the primary, pulled the inspection plate and see this bolt laying in there, it drops down into the primary and cannot reach it any longer, so this morning pull the primary cover and see where the bolt had came from, replaced and put the primary back together, put oil back into the primary and start it up, now a rattling noise is coming from the front sprocket, or it sounds that way. Any ideas what this new noise could be ? Also go to working on the rear brake, check the fluid first, it was good, check the pedal just for ***** and giggles and now have brakes again, any ideas on this also ? All this in one day
rebuild caliper, new hose and fluid, flush the fronts while you are at it.
what was the bolt in the primary for the shoe?
is the shoe worn?
did the bolt get munched by the chain/sprocket?

Mike, the bolt get get chewed somewhat, the sprocket looks good. I will pull the promary cover back off tomorrow and check the compensator nut as well to make sure not loose...The bolt was one of them them goes through the primary into the housing for the motor...I will check the chain tension as well, should have done these things before putting it back together
just a reminder to disconnect the battery.
it is fairly easy to activate the starter by manipulating the starter gear ( bendix) when the primary cover is off.
when that happens the chain moves and fingers can get plucked off.
position of kill switch or location of key have nothing to do with it.
