CFR's are bad as hell. I wish I could have them. Yes taking it in would be a good idea. I am thinking its not the compensator because I believe that they now come with the SE compensator. I would not wait until anything breaks. Get it looked at now.
You may very well still hear the "It's Normal" routine. The answer to that sort of nonsense is to require that they place in writing what the parts are that are making the "Normal Noise." If they can't tell you what is making the noise, and/or will not put it in writing, they sure as heck don't know that it is "Normal."
I hope you will post an update after you take it in. I've got some primary noises on my '09 that have been described as "normal" but they sure don't sound normal to me. I'd like to hear what you find out.
MY 2011 Road King sounds like it has a baseball card stuck clacking in the spokes while accelerating through the gears...at 1K service told..."it's normal" as well as every other thing I asked them to check. I'm going to try a different dealer even though this one is 10 minutes from my house.
Worth the ride to get things done right......not to mention it is nice to be able to look into the service area and not have your bike disappear behind a set of closed doors
I have the same noise. The dealer basically said after their inspection; "until it breaks we can do nothing for you". Harley tech in Milwaukee said the same and gave me permission to use Redline shockproof to reduce the noise in neutral. I hear from several sources that the rattle in neutral showing up on the 2012's is considered normal and expected due to the design. This is a corporate HD claim being advertised. I have always felt the main shaft bearing is going out but HD says no. we will see at some point I guess.
I have an 08 SG and I put the se comp in mine, when cold it really rattles when wrap'n rpm's, not so bad when hot but does rattle and I run Amsoil 20/50 syn. I know it is comp or chain cuz you can hear it coming from front of primary. I was going to take back apart this winter to see if I spot something when I do seals and bearings.. I got about 7k on my se comp.. Harleys are gett'n like buffalo tools, they are warranty for life also but you are always replacing ****..

Thanks all for your replys. Yes, the plan was to take it in. What I was worried about is hearing "this is nornal" ! That is why I asked here, as I know that there is more good knowledge on this site, than most dealerships ! As far as loud pipes, I was always under the impression that CFR's were loud ! I am running them and WOW they are deep and low sounding, just perfact ! Maybe the catless American Custom's will change that a little ! Craig
It could be the inner race and bearing. They are quite loud and unmistakeable though. The newer trans. has some noises the older ones did not.
OK, this is what they found. A lose primary chain. The auto adjuster hadn't yet jumped to the next notch ! They checked spring tension, alignment, ect. Went ahead and pushed into the next notch. They said that this is "the nature of the beast". But said if we have the same issue again, for as long as I did prior, they will replace the tensioner assembly. It sounds much better now, no $ charge. Craig
