Study your riding position. You may indeed be holding on too tight, but that may be because of how you sit relative to the handlebars. You could try adjusting them so they are a little closer and easier to reach. Cheaper than buying stuff that may not help you out!
If you are travelling on the open road at speed on those occasions when you suffer, it could be tension. As speed picks up so does the noise level. This can cause us to tense, hence grip the bars. A cheap way of testing for this is a pair of ear plugs. Ride the same route that gives you numbness. If you don't suffer, you have your solution!
I use ear plugs on all trips except local ones and in the car on longer journeys.
