I think that everytime you go to start the bike or car you notice all the lights go out well this takes the power away from everything and sends it to the starter I believe and thus you loose a little bit of time everytime you start your bike or car. The more you start it the more it will be off. Not an expert but just a thought

didn't say that, the OP wanted to know why this happens I shared my thoughts. I just live with the fact that every so often I have to reset the clock whether it be on the bike or in the car. I haven't heard any other explanations.

Thanks everyone, now that I see its a common issue, im not worried about it. I was just concerned there might be a short or losing power somewhere.
To the dude that was a funny guy and said read the manual, I have and yes I know how to set it, my concern was I my son has some cheap watch he got from the dollar store and it has kept the same time for 3 years, thought maybe something was wrong with the bike.
Everyone else with the helpful information, thanks really appreciate it.
A clock issue was a problem with an earlier firmware issued in 2007 (8.18 IIRC)--but they wouldn't be installing that old FW in newer bikes. I would suggest going to the HD stereo site and download/burn the newest FW. It might help, as if there is an inherent problem with a running FW they will likely fix it ASAP as they did before.
FWIW I'm using 8.19 now in my '07 and the clock is accurate enough where I only reset it for DST twice per year. AFAIK it has no issues and I've run it now for almost five years, but this old firmware might not work right with current units, so I would flash only the latest version if you have a bike newer than '08.
Mine does it too and I don't know how to set it. I am always late because I never know what time it is and when I look at the clock it says I'm on time. >>>?????????<<<
