Default Head Pipes

I notice there are several head pipes on ebay for sale! Is it ok to mix brands.
seems there are never a front and rear listed from the same manufacturer? Unless it's a brand new pair, and I am on a budget(term for cheap)...

Do you mean mixing the front & rear header with 2 different manufacturers? If so, I strongly recommend not to for a number of reasons.

I guess I assume you are going for true duals since that is the only way to get a different front from a different rear. Never seen a mixed header before. I would not do that either.

i'm sure it happens, but i have never seen true duals sold on a 'front headpipe' / 'rear headpipe' basis.....

now if you're talking about mixing a headpipe with a different muffler (ie. v&h dresser duals headpipes, with rinehart mufflers) there is absolutely no problem with that.

I am just talking about the headpipe, no mufflers. I can't see where mixing say a HD front headpipe with a V&H rear can cause a problem. I would think mixing mufflers could have some effect, with different back pressures, etc. I am considering putting true duals on my 05 to cut down on the heat, etc. Guess I need more input from more of the experts on here..

Overall, bad idea. Jumping to assumptions and conclusions, and forgive me if I am wrong; but you probably are not looking for a full dyno tune either (due to the extra cost). That (full dyno tune) is the only way you could make something like that even work. It would be next to impossible to find a canned map for a mix-matched header setup. Factor in that cost and you are well over the cost of new matching headers.

Now will the bike still run? Yeah most likely, although you may be taking unknown risks in engine life/reliablity. You will need some sort of adjustment to your fuel managment system when switching to TDs of any brand. The HD Download most likely will give poor results with mix-matched pipes because it doesn't adjust enough vairables that two different brands of headpipes will cause.

If budget is a concern, try looking at brands like Freedom Performance or Python as their price points are generally lower than V&H or Rinehart. Search Ebay or the classifieds on this forum also. Also, Rinehart TDs only will work with the muffler supplied because they are 2" at the muffler, where stock and 99% of slip-ons are 1 7/8". Even Rinehart slip-ons are 1 7/8" at the inlet.

You can wait on the "experts" if you want to, but most them don't use use cobbled up chop job exhaust sytems. Mod your OEM pipes with the recently posted freeze plug method, or if you can find another pipe to splice in place of the OEM Y "cross over" section and eliminate the square 90* turn that you would get by employing the "freeze plug" method. You may even be able to cut and rotate the OEM "Y" section and weld back in, either way you're gonna have to cut and weld. As mentioned previously you will also need a proper tune. If you want some expert advice, go buy a quality exhaust system from a reputable manufacturer and then get it tuned.

Keep you stock head pipes and use FM's jackpot dyno tuned mufflers.

Ok, guys. Don't get your panties in such a wad. God, whatever happened to the inventors, or the backyard mechanics that could make anything work, just about. I grew up with the idea if you can save a buck do so. I bought a power commander off ebay for 76.00, guess I should have bought a new one for 300.00. Why. The remark about the dyno tune and the cost, your are right, I wouldn't spend the money, unless I just wanted to **** it away, I've seen to many posts, where guys got a dyno tune and the bike still run like crap. Also, don't like the idea of some wrench jockie, abusing my bike as I have heard of. Thanks for the info. I think I will contact Jamie, or Power Commander and get their take on this.
Thanks for the tip on the fuelmoto mufflers, but I want the heat gone from the right side, and haven't heard they will do that.
