Like you, I hated the HD half helmet intercom. They are some of the most torturist pieces of crap made.
It makes no sense to move to a bluetooth headset when you have a built in system on your bike. You will loose all the functionality of the system by doing that because you will loose the cb function and not be able to listen to cds or the fm radio through them. The only thing that you would gain is being able to talk on your cell phone. If you want that then order the HDBOMM.
I got the J&M half helmet intercom and they are awesome! The microphone is built into the ear pocket and they are all self contained and slide right into your half helmet. I can look up the part number if you cant find them on J&M's website. The music quality is superb and the microphone beats the HD one hands down. No more screaming into the microphone to activate the VOX.
I use the IMC Motorcom half helmet head set. These guys make the HD Boom Audio version (HD p/n: 76572-09) and it is the same with the exception of not being black, no clothing clip, and no HD branding. $80 bux vs. $120 and they offer discounts to HDF members. http://imcmoto.com/harley-davidson-u...adset-kit.html
I personally find them very comfortable if you put the wire/mic boom on the right side. Can wear them all day long. BTW-The mic boom will pivot where it meats the ear piece.
No, they are not Bose quality audio but do a good job for the price and have a 2 year warranty...
If you don't mind the cord then go with J&M. The cost is certainly more than IMC or Harley but they (we) have options that sound great and are comfortable.

This is a little off the original subject, but on my recent trip I decided to connect the intercom/headset in my modular helmet. I was going solo so really only wanted it for the radio. The 2nd day out, the intercom receiver on the tank came apart. The small silver ring nut backed off, the plug "fell" inside the cover and then I could not connect to the headset. Later that day in Charleston WV, the dealer told me how to access the connector, their service was closed on Mondays. That night at the motel I fixed it, only for it to come apart again the 2nd day. Fixed it again but when I connected the helmet plug to the bike receiver, it pushed right through the ring nut. Lost the silver ring that time. A HD dealer in N AL replaced the plug and connector under warranty later that day, along with the brake switch recall. Bottom line, check the security of the connector on the tank. The dealers "special tool" was a small screw driver and something to tap it tight.
Both myself and my wife wear 1/2 helmets. The intercom set that came with the UC needs pockets for the ear speakers. We bought a second set of the ones like the OP has/had that have the plastic band that wraps around the back of the head. Like MasterGuns has said, they hurt like hell after a short time.
I'd like to find a decent pair to use with a 1/2 helmet. Something like the earbuds someone posted but with a mic that can be clamped to a 1/2 helmet. It seems every pair on the market has the flat speakers that require a full or 3/4 helmet. Does anyone know if it's possible to have the disc speakers on the HD Full Helmet Premium Music and Communication Headset swapped out for earbuds?
I thought I saw a posting on ebay a year or so ago about a guy that was selling an adapter that you plug into the HD console and then use a Plantronics Mic/earbud system. I checked the Plantronics site and can't see that set there now - guess they discontinued it.
They did discontinue the .Audio 480 headset but they can still be had on eBay. This listing 280886705007 is a good price for one. Just need to make sure you get a computer headset with two plugs. The single plug 480 headset is for cell phones only. The adapter is still available on eBay but I can not post the listing number since I make them. Just do a search for Harley Headset Adapter.
