Default Neutral Switch Location

Hi everyone, fairly new to Harleys so I have a basic question:

Where is the neutral switch physically located?

I just bought a very neglected 2002 Ultra Classic a few weeks ago. I just got done changing all of the fluids, adjusting the clutch, bleeding the brakes, installed a new rear tire, installed a remanufactured Radio and a few other things so I have had quite a few things apart. The neutral light worked before I did all of these things and now it does not so I have a feeling I broke a wire or knocked the connector off. I have already checked the light bulb and that is good. I have read some other troubleshooting idea here on this forum and others so I have some good tips on things to check.

Thanks!

It should be on top the tranny, caddycorner to the oil fill cap. if the two wires are plugged into the switch, I would guess something happened under the fairing while you were working on the radio. look closely at the wiring inside the fairing, especially the stuff that leads to the instrument pannel.

If your new to Harleys you will need this.
http://www.shopronniesharleydavidson.com/index.htm
click on OEM Harley-Davidson parts finder to go to the microfiche. Put in your model year and select the model then save that page to your favorites. That way every time you click on the favorite it will take you to your bike.
After you fill in the parts list with a quantity you have to add them to the parts list. After all the parts you want are added to the list you have to send them to the cart. Then you can see the part numbers and the MFG list price and Ronnies price. You do not have to order.

Good Luck !!!

Thanks guys. I think I found it. I just went out and looked at it real quick, it appears to be hooked up. I will try shorting the two wires together to see if the light comes. If that doesn't work, I will read out the wires. I have a wiring diagram.

Here's the latest update. I went out this morning and read out the wires between the neutral switch and the bulb and everything checks out. I connect the 2 wires on the neutral switch together and the neutral light comes on. So I guess with all of the things that I have done, it just happens to be a coincidence that the neutral switch has gone bad. I will be making a trip to the local dealer to get a new switch this afternoon when it warm up a bit.

I have a Clymer manual for the bike. Is the one you have the Harley version?

Its a simple proximity switch, with a very short throw, try tightening the switch a little first, if it doesn't work pull it out and depress the ball, then check for continuity across the two contacts. If it does work, then check the main bolts that hold the trans gearset into the housing, especially the ones the exhaust bracket is linked to. If theses are loose it will allow the gearset to shift enough that the ball will not depress enough to close the switch.

Thanks I will give that a try. It seems to be intermittent. When I drove the bike for the 1st time after doing all of the maintenance, it worked at the first stoplight that I came to. Today it did not work at the 1st stop, but has worked ever since.

CSI: I will take the manual. I just sent you a PM with my information.
