I ride an 04 Eglide Classic that Ive only had for 3 weeks. I've noticed a whine when it's in 4th gear at all rpms. Does anybody else have this and does anybody know what causes it?
I have a 2001 rk classic and 4th gear whines but not bad. I just got a new rk classic with the 6 speed in it and 5th gear is horrible. The dealer says it's built in at the factory at no extra charge. What an *******. Because one rides only for a short time in 4th it's ( the noise) is not objectionable to me, however because a lot of time is spent in 5th I think the continous whine sucks. I've had five touring HDs and the new one is the worst for noise. It comes from the spur (straight thoothed)gears used in the tranny. There all spur gears in the older bikes and in the 07s spirs are used in 1st and 5th. Hopefully I'll get used to it.
My 06 EG Standard does it also.
Everyone seems to think it's normal.
If it's a spur gear 4th like Dickie says , it would be normal , that would be the nature of the beast.
I will probably try a few different transmission oils next year to see if it may be reduced a bit.
I'm not worried though......

My 05 Ultra whines in 4th also, but not bad. Seems to be normal. It seems to have gotten more noticeable after I switched to synthetic for all the oils. But 10,000 miles later, no problem.
my 06 EG does it too. got 5,400 mile on her now, seems to be much quieter than when she was new. don't bother me a bit. going to ful synth next spring, we'll see if that changes anything.
On the 5-speed models the whine from fourth gear compared to fifth is from gear contact. While in fourth gear power is distributed through four gears on the outside edges of the mainshaft and countershaft nearest the transmission case. You are basically turnng both shaft and gears on the left and right side of the case. When you shift into fifth power is distributed through the mainshaft, to the main drive gear to the pulley. Alot less going on. Speed is an issue also. Most riders build up speed in fourth before shifting to 5th for cruising speeds.
See guys a little whine is as normal for the 07 as it was for previous years, It is discussed very well if you do a search of 4th gear whine, was 2 pages of posts on it. Bottom line its the same for those or 07s nothing to worry about at all.
