Unhappy Hidden add-ons

Ok, Maybe I'm confused. I have a 2008 Roadglide (new to me). It's stock and I want to add a tour-pak. I have seen several but one piece or another seems to be a "separate purchase". What is everything I need to buy to install, from scratch, a trunk with the armrests for the passenger, rear speakers, and adjustable? Are the rear speakers a plug-in or do I need to be an electrical engineer? I am fairly mechanically inclined with no formal training. I also want a GPS - any ideas on the best and the best mount? And while I'm at it, I like the Nolan modular helmet and am wondering if I HAVE to go with the comm system from Nolan or if there is a HD system that will work if we chose to go with another helmet later? I've been riding for quite a few years and my first HD was a street glide that I traded for the RG. I've never had to deal with all the accessories and choices before...Any advice would be great! Glad I found the forum and hopefully, in 10 or so years, I'll be in all of your shoes chuckling at the new guy as I offer my opinions!

tour paks come in different sizes, and with/without the speaker pods--- so you decide which one you want.

the "hard" tour pak mount or the detachable- your choice

pick the big or small backrest pad

so basically you decide what you want and get it.

or watch the classifieds and get something and make it fit ( 09+ mounting hardware will not work on your frame)

I don't use gps or helmets or comms... so even less help there

As to GPS's, I have a Garmin Nuvi 550, which is the motorcycle use Garmin so its waterproof. There is a newer version out, the 665 I believe, that is thinner and has more options like XM satellite radio, or something, I am not real sure. You want to wire the GPS right into the cigarette lighter wiring which is behind the fairing. You will have to remove the outer fairing shell, which is not too bad to do at all, then splice in the wires and either electrical tape it over or use shrink wrap. Even though the electrical tape is not as cool and trendy to do, you can easily remove it later to remove the wiring if you sell the bike and want to keep your GPS and electrical tape seals fine and is not visible behind the fairing anyway.

As to a mount you can use just about anything RAM puts out, from a handlebar clamp, or a ball mount bracket that bolts in place of part of your clutch bracket or the one I use, the mirror mount hole ball mount.

My brother has the Garmin 665 (hope thats the right number) and he uses it with his helmet to listen to the XM radio and hear the GPS directions.

The 'hidden add-ons' are annoying;
BUT, consider that person who has all of the parts and pieces but just wants to repair a single item or two and if not sold in this manner will have to purchase a bunch of unneeded parts just to repair a single item....
Now that would really !@#@!&*!!
As to comm units- they can be moved from helmet to helmet; and there are a number available. I have used and like J&M personally for some of their items; and service.
And FWIW, no chuckling here....

If your local dealer has a parts person that's any good at all, he can tell you exactly what parts you need. I don't like going to the dealer often, but I have a tour pack also, and you do have to order a few different parts, its not just one part number for the kit.

Well, my response will not be as quick. I added the Detachable Tour Pak, Intercom/Music Kit and Rear Speakers and CB to my '09 Road Glide, so I speak from experence.

Your best bet to find a Tour Pak that has the speakers and other accessories already attached is to watch the classified, or eBay.

To add the rear speakers, switches in the speakers and the intercom system requires you to decide how you want to proceed.

You can purchase two different "Intercom/Music kits, depending how you want to wire the rear speakers and mount the Tour Pak. No mater how you go, one part that both kits require is the Non-Ultra Wiring Harness (70169-06). Both kits plug into this harness.

The least expensive and easiest one is to solid mount the Tour Pak and add the Boom!™ Audio Music and Intercom Kit for Tour-PakŽ Models (76440-06). This includes the Rear Speaker w/switch wiring, and Passenger intercom. You will still be required to purchase the Boom!™ Audio Communications Switch Kit () to plug in the Rider Headset. It mounts in the Fuel tank dash. This kit also includes the left handlebar control that is already on your bike. What I did was to watch eBay for the dash to come up. I saves a lot of money.

To use the Detachable Kit, you will need to use Boom!™ Audio Music and Intercom Kit (77107-09). This kit includes the Rider as well as the Passenger headset hook ups. It also includes the Speaker switch and left handlebar control, that you again already have on your bike. The only problem with this kit is that it eliminates the wiring to the rear speakers. You can still add the rear speaker harness (77157-06) but will need to wire it your self. (That is what I did with my '09 Road Glide). This way I can have the intercom/Music for my Headsets with or without the Tour Pak. And I can still have the rear speakers when I attach my Tour Pak.

The Detachable kit for your '08 is as follows.

Docking Hardware Fitment Matrix – ’97-’08 Models
Touring Detachable Rack . . . . . . . . . Docking Kit
Two-Up Tour-Pak Rack P/N 53276-04 53804-06

Like I said, if you watch eBay and search, you can save a lot of money. Or you can go to Harley and, using the above part numbers, but all of the kits and assemble it your self. Note: I put both the AM/FM and CB antenna inside the Fairing. It makes removal of the Tour Pak much easier.
If you have any questions, let me know and I will try to answer them.

Thank you all for the replies! I guess I have a Sunday on the internet ahead of me. Ultra89, I don't have a CB but do have AM/FM already. Do I need another antenae? If it's not needed, I wouldn't add one to the tour pak. I am stationed in Germany right now and there is a dealership down the road but everything here is 30% higher than the states so Most of my shopping will be on the computer and I'll just suck up the shipping. My goal is to ride the Alps in fall of '12. Again, thanks for the help - I now have a starting point!

unless you need it everyday, consider just getting a tbag-- when you get there, you just carry it into the hotel- done.

then you just need a little rack or backrest

You don't need the CB antenna unless you add the CB. The antenna for the AM/FM is off of the Saddlebag mount on the left side. If you add the Tour Pak and don't move the antenna, it will hit the Tour Pak. If you do not put it inside the Fairing, you will need the Antenna Relocation kit (76208-07). You will need to move the antenna, one way or the other.
