Here's the way I would look at this question. I just bought the top of the line motorcycle (not counting CVO's) and it has all the stuff I want for touring. Now I'm going to figure out a way to take that tour pak off and give it that Street Glide look. It may cost $700-$800 to do it, but that's okay. Now, I have that mod complete, but where am I supposed to store this mighty fine tour pak when I want the bike to look like a Street Glide? Oh, no problem, H-D has got storage racks for a couple hundred bucks - I'll buy one of those. So I just spent upwards of $800-$1,000 to take something off the bike that I paid $1,200 for (I think that's about the cost of a tour pak - maybe more if it's painted something other than black).
It makes no sense to me. I just traded in my Street Glide for an Electra Glide Classic so I could have the benefits of a tour-pak. I'm not takin' it off just cause I'm only riding to the store, church, friends, wherever. I bought that tour-pak and I'm ridin' with it - all the time. Your money can be better spent.
My $0.02
You are absolutely right. I have had the bike since OCT. 14, and hit 2600 miles on her today. I use the Tour Pack every day, so why take it off? I guess sometimes we need someone to give us a reality smack...so thank you!
We went with a cargo rack and bag. If we had a tour pack it would only be on for overnighters. My GF is quite comfortable on the stock seat and backrest.
I have a 2012 Ultra Limited and was thinking of getting the detachable hardware to remove the tourpack and giant seat but was wondering how convenient the removable tour pack option really is. May go with a solo seat and small luggage rack when riding solo, but was wondering if it was worth the coin? DO you guys actually put the tour pack on and off, or do you wish you'd have just kept it on permanent?
If you ride infrequently with a passenger, go for it. Also, take the TP off the bike when you don't need it; otherwise, the TP becomes addictive. Said another way, if you are accustomed to riding the bike w/o the TP, you'll have a different (IMO "better") riding experience and you'll be accustomed to not having the additional storage of the TP.
If you ride regularly with a passenger, just leave the TP permanently mounted.
I thought this was one of the first mods I would do, but I just can't bring myself to drop $600 on a kit for it, and still have to do the work, or pay for it.
It has been pushed back to the end of the line of things I want to do, and I probably won't do it. I have become accustomed to the extra storage, it's convenient, I can charge my cell phone in there while riding, and I don't have to hassle with the wires. The bike rides just fine to me with it on, just can't justify the $600 for that when I still want to do cams, handlebars, etc. And then I would have to get a different seat, because the stock Ultra seats look horrible IMHO when the TP is off.
If I had to take 6 bolts out I'd never take mine off either! To me its a completely different animal without it installed, but I'm an aggressive rider so some might not notice as much difference. If your one of those guys that has trouble at red lights, stop signs, parkin lots etc. with your balance, take it off and ride without it. You'll see what I mean. You'll be surprised how much quicker/faster the bike is. Without a passenger it's like a parachute back there.
Wiring isn't an issue JJ. Everything is easily disconnected. One of my winter mods is to install some quick-disconnect plugs under the seat so I dont have as much extra wiring to deal with.
My advise to anyone considering this is unbolt it, forget about the kit for a while, and try it!
i've got detachable TP and a SG saddle. Two bikes in one. I usually have SG seat and no TP but put them on for long riding with my girlfriend or my son. I also have sissy bar for short rides with them. No regrets!!!
I will say the bike is much lighter, quicker and nimble without the Tp on it
I ride an "Ultra Classic Street Glide" 90%+ of the time with a solo seat. When riding 2 up over 200 miles or 2 days, it reverts back to an Ultra Classic with a touring Corbin. I should say that I do NOT have the quick detach. I spend a little more time install/remove but its really no big deal. As Timvan said, the center of gravity is much lower and the bike seems much more nimble when the TP is off.
I didn't buy the detachable hardware you don't really need it. I can have my tour pak off in 10 minutes with some minor wrenching. I bought some used Street Glide strut covers for $30 which gives it a nicer look IMO without any detachable hardware showing. Also with stock Tour Pak bracket it's sturdy and I am not as worried about someone lifting it easily off as a detachable one.
