Tranny install time?????
Getting the old 5 speed replaced with a 6 speed and I'm just curious how long this should actually take. From what I read these drop in transmissions cut alot of time off the actual install. My indy told me 5-6 hours...Is this about average? Thanks...
Actual time is often governed by things such as what accessories have to come off, like added chrome covers, how many round bolts and other unexpected complications ( and this is why the "we only can think about what we've been taught" H-D dealers can't/won't work on bikes more than a few years old.
Billable Hours:
In the automotive world, guides are published which give the time charges allowed for specific tasks- then X hours times the labour rate.
For Autos, the "Mitchell Guide" is the bible and I have successfully argued when additional procedures were charged for that should have been covered by the "umbrella" of the major task ( for example being charged to remove the wheels for a brake job.
The way that this is structured, great techs do the job quickly and make a little, poor techs fall behind and do not.
( the other part of this equation is that in a large shop the guy at the counter is a "service writer" this is a commission position, and they will try to sell you additional services)
ASK the Indy is he is quoting actual or "bulk" hours for your job, and then decide is that is fair to you.
Keep in mind that he is pulling part of the exhaust, pulling the inner & outer primary, clutch, chain, adjuster and etc.
Then putting it all back and adjusting so it works.
This would be a good time to replace the clutch discs and steels if you've been thinking about it, same with primary chain or adjuster.
5 to 6 hours sounds fair to me
Mike
