Default Ride report 12/12/2011

It was an interesting one today: Interstate 25, 29 degrees, 80-82 MPH... and a 2x12 in the road. I didn't have enough time for an evasive maneuver so took it straight on. It felt like this riding over it: Though my a$$hole is still a little puckered, I sure am glad I was on an 850 lb. touring machine. Thank you Moco.

That would have freaked me out too. I haven't been able to get my bike out of the neighborhood yet as there is still too much ice on the road.

Bottom line is you're writing about it. That's a good thing.

Was it perpendicular to the lane? I'd hate to hit the side of it if it was somewhat parallel to the lane.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. I don't know what it was but, like you, I didn't have enough time to safely avoid it (I was afraid to lean the bike and hit the object at the same time) so I hit it straight on. Felt like I was on a bucking horse. It popped both saddlebag lids open and bent the front rim. I was doing 70 at the time.

I fully understand your pucker factor.

I hate people who don't properly secure loads, and I hate more people who don't properly secure loads and leave it in the highway, personally I think doing that should be a felony.

I was riding in light rain, with my wife on board, headed out of Newport, Oregon doing about 65+. My buddy in front of me swerved to miss a obstruction in the road but I didn't have a chance to miss it. It was a 4x4 about 3ft long. Bent the front rim, bent the exhaust pipe going underneath frame. Amazing it didn't blow the tire. We didn't go down but it scared the hell out of me. It's a wonder we survived.

Glad you're OK!! Riding over a 2x4 is an exercise in the MSF course. But there it is at about 20-30 MPH, not 70! I've encountered debris like that on the highway but have always seen it soon enough and had room to evade. Good for you to handle it properly and stay upright!
