Default 2001 Roadking stage 1 kit

I have recently picked up a 2001 Roadking with the older style air intake, (Mag-Marelli Injection). My question is what kind of problems can occur with this kind of injection system, did I make a big mistake picking this up, and is there anything I can do to prevent future problems?

You will likely get some mixed messages here. The MM was noted for idle issues. Either the idle would drop off or more frequently it would keep getting faster until you had an idle speed you could cruise with. I put 55,000 miles on my '01 RKC and never had an ounce of trouble with it.

Some will say that it is fine as stock but you can't mod a bike with MM. I bumped mine up to 95", changed the cams and had high flow AC and pipes. I ran a PC III on mine. No problems.

The one knock I will say for it is it limits you in upgrades. This is more the 2001 year then the MM but you will find that there are a number of options that won't work on an '01. From the flush mount gas guage to cruise control, many things only will work on '02 and later models.

I loved my '01 and miss her. I don't think you should bail on yours.

i GUESS WHAT HAS ME MORE WORRIED THAN ANYTHING IS THAT IF THE Mag-Marelli Injection were to go out I hear there isnt much chance of finding a replace ment and to bump it up to the newer system could run $4K. If worse comes to wose can I cheaply switch back to a carb or am I married to this.

Do a search on MM and carb and you will find a lot. A number of guys did just that. It is not cheap but not $4k either. As far as I know you can still get MM parts. I wouldn't worry to much but that is just my opinion.

Carb conversion could cost as little as $300 if you know what you are doing.

so keep that as your back up plan.

for now, just ride and enjoy it.

I neglected to mention regarding the MM idle issue, it was an easy fix to reset it.
