Your cold riding record
When I was a teen, I lost my license for DUI on New Years Eve. I lived in Central Minnesota, and had to ride my bicycle for transportation. Every nite, I would ride to the g/f house, frigid temps, snow on the ground, etc.......all for the sake of some "leg".
Was it worth it? HELL YA...
I was born and raised in WINTERpeg in Canada till I moved
south when I was 21 years old.
Up to that point I rode all year round in Canada, in WINTERpeg
it was normal to have 35 to 45 below zero with 50 or 60 MPH
winds bring it to something like 80 or 90 below zero. I not only
rode my snowmobiles in this weather, I rode my motorcycles
back and forth to work in this weather even with 6 inchs of ice
on the roads and blowing snow. I did this by choice, I had two
cars I just loved riding motorcycles more then driving cars and
I still do today living near Charlotte NC. my car has not turned
a wheel in about 14 months and I have about 70,000 miles on
my motorcyces this year. I haven't put 200 miles on my car in
the last 3 or 4 years.
I ride here in the NC.SC.TN.GA.VA.WV. mountains all year round
from 0 degrees to 100 degrees. My wife and I love living and
riding here, it is motorcycle heaven here in any weather as far
as we are concerned. I do not miss 45 below zero riding a
motorcycle at all but I would do it all over again because of
some of the great memories it has left me with! it's all good
when your young, being an old fart I have to have my electric
heated riding gear and I won't ride in anything less then 20 below
zero anymore... LOL"
One of my best memories of Canada and motorcycle riding is
one friend of mine who use to ride from the west coast of
Canada to the east coast and back again every Jan or Feb
just for the FUN of it with his wife right up until he died at
almost 100 years old. He never owned a car and never
ever drove one his whole life. For some who may remember
him his name was Walt Healey of Walt Healey motorcycles in
Calgary Alberta, the oldest motorcycle dealer to stay in
the same location in North America. His kids run it now and
it is still in the same spot Walt opened at back in the early
1900's...
I loved the man, he was the only true motorcyclest/biker I've
ever known and I sure do miss him! They don't make riders
like him anymore...
I will be doing my ritualistic Sat morning trip tomorrow "25 miles" to get cathead biscuts and gravy at a place north of home.
Somehow the trip always takes a 10 mile ride and extends it to 25 to 35 miles where I can get a decent short ride first thing in the morning.
They say here in North Gawga that the temp will be 20 when I ride out.
I stay pretty warm with the thinsulate lined Carharts, FXRG midweight and my only helmet "a full face Shoei" but will probably wear my shampa balaclava tomorrow morning.
now having said that,
before you go out to set a cold weather record , please save me some typing and do a google seatch on HYPOTHERMIA , and how to recognize it and what to do............your family will appreciate it.
take it from me who came to develop some of the symptoms on a ride and almost ended up in a hospital,,,,,,,,,,,,quick cue , if you start trembling an d slur your speech,
and if you get there and have no choice , get a ton of newspapers and wrap yourself in them for the ridr back.
and, note that your body temp. is 98.5 , and if you allow it to drop to 96.5 or lower , you enter a period where you may return if treated .or your internal organs will shut down and say good nite johnny ..........
well ,having said that , have fun..........

We used to ride dirt bikes in the snow all the time as kids. It was fun and I
never remember being cold. We have a group that put "lake tires" on in the winter
and race on the frozen lakes. They put hex head sheetmetal screws into
the ***** of the tires. We also have a few kids in the around the lake with those
little 50 cc pit bikes. 3 of them were out yesterday racing each other around some
fish houses. It was hilarious, I hope they come back today.
