Preparing for my tensioner upgrade/cam project. There are some miscellaneous tools that I know will make life easier, but also aren't really required. Trying to keep the project reasonable from a cost standpoint. Let me know what you think is worth paying a few dollars for. For the record, I will be going in through the top.
Pushrod clip tool
Special rocker box wrenches
Dogbone torque adapters
Cam/crank sprocket locking tool
Oil pump alignment screws
I have or will have the major tools like torque wrenches, bearing puller, the manual, etc. It is the miscellaneous stuff I'm wondering about. Thanks.
Of the special tools you mention I have the oil pump (lifter block) alignment screws, which I consider to be essential, and a rocker box wrench, which is not essential, but nice. As for the rest, I'd say you don't need them. Or at least, I don't need them. Ill bet the pushrod tube clip tool would be nice, but I use a clothespin to hold them up for adjusting pushrods (you won't have this issue, it doesn't sound like, since you plan to go through the top) and a big screwdriver to put the clips back on.
I just used the Motion Pro pushrod tool yesterday for the first time. It costs under $30 and was well worth it! I bought both Screamin eagle rocker box wrenches. They are both nice to have. Cam/crank locking tool is real nice as well. I like all these tools, would buy them again. You can struggle through the job without, but why? It makes the job so much easier and enjoyable.
I made my own "rocker box wrenches"
I cut 1/2 inch off an allen wrench use a ratchet wrench on the allen segment inserted in the rocker bolt hex hole
also use cheap allens to hold the tensioners slacked off these are throw aways.
alignment of the oil pump is critical. any thing that makes this alignment true is worth it.
if you are pulling the intake manifold 1/2 inch chunk of allen will be your best friend again.
05 glide 2 sets of tensioner worn all the way out 40k
se every thing now no problems
There is a rocker box wrench on Amazon that says it is a 3/16 Allen and fits all Evolution engines. This same wrench should also work on twin cams shouldn't it? It is a Kastar kas6529.
Did i miss something on the oil pump alignment? i thought it said you roll th motor over a couple times before torqueing the oil pump bolts
It says to get two oil pump alignment screws, roll the engine over while tightening them. Tighten the bolts, take the screws out, put the rest of the bolts in and tighten them. That's the gist of it anyway.
