What is the secret to installing the HDPDLUS iPod interface on the Ultra Classic. I have it installed and can't get the fairing back on. It seems that the large electrical connector is the problem. What is the secret to getting it positioned so the fairing goes back on?
That is the same problem I had. I thought it was because I also have the J&M 500W amp and the 7.25" speakers and an HID headlamp. If you can't get this resolved, I still have your $$ in the cabinet if we need to meet and exchange. Not what either of us want, but I don't want you to be holding something you can't use if it turns out that way.
Thank you Ken. I do want it if I can get it installed. I am having difficulty putting the fairing back on. Hopefully someone here will be able to tell me what I need to do. If seems that the electrical connector is too large to fit. I haven't given up yet.
I just installed one last night, that adaptor is a bitch to get turned and stuffed in under the radio. Got it though but ran out of time to mess with the thing and really see how all of the controls work. Also the cable to the back of the bike could be 6" longer.
One of the difficulties when designing a product like this is to provide one that will fit as many models as possible.
Because the Ultras already have the 35 wire Ultra connector, you really don't need all of the extra wires supplied with the product; but, to provide a plug and play product, the vendor includes them.
When I looked at this product, I concluded that I'd disassemble the wiring supplied; get rid of all of the extra wiring supplied; only use those 5-7 wires (I don't recall the exact number and don't have access to the HD instructions for it's kit) from the module to the first 35 wire connector; and, insert those relatively few wires into the OEM 35 wire connector already on the bike. The wire colors and chambers to be used are identified in the HD kit's instructions.
I ended up using the HD iPod module. But I did talk to Tony at Iron Cross Audio and he confirmed that my approach would work--after all, the aftermarket product must use the same iPod wiring in the HK radio that the HD unit uses and that wiring consists of only 5-7 wires.
As for disassembling the supplied harness/connectors in the aftermarket kit, they use Tyco Amp Weatherseal connectors so the info on this is in the HD SM as well as on the Tyco Amp's website.
