Is the 103 that much better or quicker than the 96?
I have both a 96" SG & 103" SG; for the brief period of time that the 103" I barely notice the difference in power. But the 96" also has a Stage 1. Since that time the I've installed a Stage 1 and TW-555 cams on the 103" and now its like comparing a VW Beetle to a Vette.
7-cu/i isn't going to make a huge difference w/normal hwy cruising & 96" can easily be upgraded w/minor UG to match. Are you looking @ bikes, or just curious for feedback?
My 103" Road Glide was noticeably more powerful than my 96" Ultra Classic. At least on the on-ramps, where opening up the throttle was possible. Around town and on tour, I'm not convinced the additional power showed itself that much.
In any event, I don't ever feel like I am down on power with the 96"; there is much more to motorcycling than 0-60 times.
Better or quicker requires two answers and who you ask. For me, I prefer and bought a 96" over the 103" for these reasons, for the 103" they made these changes which I did not like:
1. Bushing-less cam plate
2. Bushing-less rods
The 103" was bored reducing the cylinder wall thickness, hence it runs hotter than a 96". The other may require you do some reading on over-square vs under-square motors. Not every year from Harley Davidson brings the best changes, some are made strictly due to cost. Again these are just my opinions and others here have theirs.
