Remove 2 screws,T-27. I used a 1/4 drive with small extension. You have to pop a small outer cover made of plastic, just pops off. Remove electrical plug from each end. Pull unit out and reverse procedure.
I am told it helps when braking.
I do have two flags on the rear which I am told can get in the way of the factory lights.
I agree with myillearth. I also did this upgrade. Pretty straight forward. I went one step further, and added an LED tail light as well. REALLY lights up the back end when the brakes are applied! I also upgraded the headlight to an HID system. I'm a strong beleiver of "better and brighter lights".
I just ordered the run/brake tri-bar for mine also. I did it on my 07. Adds a lot more brake light back there.
I'm curious on the wiring though. The 09's have the harness under the side cover and the 06-07 have them at the tail light. They list them as fitting 06-09 all over. Now, I've done one before but somehow I don't see that wiring harness going all the way to the side cover.
I purchased this light upgrade but had not gotten around to installing it when the stock running light took a dump (never was told why). Dealer did not have a replacement part in stock (surprise??) and would have to order one for me. I told them that I had the tri-bar upgrade at home and asked if they would install instead. Sure, no problem. They went ahead and ordered the stock replacement unit anyway and gave it to me when I brought the bike in for the warranty repair. Easy install and WAY BETTER than stock. I also did LED upgrades to the rear brake light/turn signal.
MUCH MUCH BETTER. The brake light tri-bar should be STOCK in my opinion!
