I have also seen it used if a dog comes off the curb, canine or otherwise. Handy and convenient. I made my own out of braided parachute cord with a BIG washer on the end.

A swift boot to the snout works well too. I've seen the "get back" whips occasionally around town. One guy's touched the ground when he stopped. I would be worried about it getting caught up in something and yanking the bars. Some days I just seem so damned practical I bore myself.
