Default Adding Ohlins, stupid question

I read a lot and learn a lot from the forum. Been reading about upgrading the suspension and thinking about doing it on my 09 SG. Have to admit, a little imtimidated by doing it myself. I'm hoping it's just cause it's new to me. Is it a big job? Can an average weekend handy man with tools handle the job.

Which Ohlins? The #6s with the remote reservoir are much tougher than the 2s or 3s which are very straightforward..

You will need a lift to get the back wheel of the ground.

KingKingKing, did you solve your ohlin #6 shock hitting your muffler. Wondering if there will be a problem with the monster ovals.

Agree, that's all it took me to install my #3's a few days ago.

I fitted my Ohlins #3s while doing other jobs, but swapping shocks is no different than on my Sportster, which I did more recently. You need to support the weight of the bike, which I used a simple scissor jack for. The jiffy stand will take all the weight you put on it.

I have this problem with my #3-4 ohlins, I have 3.5" Rush pipes and right now with the bike on the lift the axle nuts hit the pipes not the shocks. This is because the 4's are longer than stock when extended which will happen when you hit a hole and the wheel and swingarm drop. 05Train on here had the same problem and ended up going with 4" Jackpots which have a indent in them for the axle. Looks like I will be going that way or with the 4.5" touring since they are tapered. Not sure about the Monster ovals, do they have an indent where the axle is?

To the OP, this could be a problem depending on which shocks you get, looks like you said SG, so if you stay with the 12" height I don't think this would be a problem.

I had the axle nut hitting the Monster Ovals when I installed the Ohlins 13 1/4" shocks on my SG. I fixed it with a ball peen hammer and some tapping until I got the indent I needed in the pipe to clear the nut. Didn't crease the pipe finish enough to cause any rusting. I did brush some clear coat on the area just in case though. Later I found out that if I had ordered the MO's for an Ultra, the indents would have been there already.

Like others have said it's about a one hour job. I installed mine a little over a week ago. For what it's worth my writeup of the installation and impressions after a couple hundred miles riding on them can be viewed HERE.

There will probably be a problem with the MOs. My Basic Slip Ons have the dents in them and they still hit.

Longer bolts and 1/4" spacers fixed it.
