Can anyone recommend from personal experience/installed a good HD upgrade for an oil level/oil temp indicator? I’d like to get one of the CAP style types that is just plug and play. I’ve see one at my local dealer recently but there was no price on it. Seemed to be chrome and had a plastic stick that went into the oil tank and featured LCD screen to show level and temp too.
Can you ask the salesman, how much it is?
You may want to change the air temp to oil temp gage, as I've heard the oil temp dipstick is easy to get stolen.
I've had one for 2 years. After a few weeks oil began seeping into the LED display but it still worked. Two years later the oil covers about half the display. Looks awful but still works. Dealer confirmed that lots of them do this, and no warranty for it.
Starting in '07 the dipstick model screw in, not as likely to get stolen. The fairing mounted unit I think is better but more work to install
I've ordered the fairing mount, and it is on the way! $120, and I think it is worth!
According to the installation instruction, it is not that bad; one hour max, plus I will change the oil anyway.
BTW. I really like the windshield from your company. So far so good, perfect for me!
It's your bike and you should do what you want but personally I've never seen the value in checking oil temperature after you've stopped riding and gotten off the bike. I know I could not reach down and push the button on this while riding down the road and then look down to see the reading.
I'd vote for putting an oil temperature gauge in the fairing that you can monitor while riding. This would seem to be much more useful to me.
In regards to checking the oil level, I've found the stock dip stick works just fine. Some have reported difficulty when checking the oil hot without burning their hands. I've checked my bike a number of times when hot and when cold and found virtually no difference in the oil level, so I always check mine when cold.
