A buddy and I went riding the other day and it got dark before we got back. He said that my brake light would flash intermittently while going down the road. I found that the light would come on by moving the front lever just a hair. Thinking there might be an adjustment I broke out the service manual and could not find a word about the brake light switch other than putting a shim in the lever when removing it. I haven't touched it (but that doesn't mean the P/O didn't). I'm about to order a BAL but want to get this fixed before I do.
What can I do to fix it? Is there an adjustment or do I have to buy a whole new switch? You'd think there would be something in the manual.
It should come on as soon as you hit the brakes when the switch opens. The switch is just a little plunger that pops out when you hit the brakes triggering the lights. The only way to adjust his would be to move it further out of the housing (toward the extension on the lever that depresses it) so that you have to move the lever more before it extends fully. It is possible it just got a little loose and is moving back into the control housing.
Have you had the front brake lever off for any reason? If you dont follow the service manual and use the shim under the lever you have messed the switch up.
First i would ask how loose is your brake lever? if its normal then the switch just needs to be replaced. if its sloppy then the brake plunger that applies pressure to the lever needs to be replaced
I haven't had any reason to take the lever off but I can't say what the previous owner has done. The lever seems to have the normal amount of play in it. There is a little movement up and down but no slop forward and back. It's starting to look like a new switch is required.
Another question is how far do you normally have to pull the lever back before the front brakes engage? I have to pull mine back about 3/4 of the way before I get any braking action. I've tried bleeding both calipers but it had no effect.
