follow the instructions. do careful measuring, and like the instructions say, use masking tape to draw the locations. mine was simple, but does take attention to ensure you have it fitting and looking right before you put the drill to the tour pac.
there were a few posts on this do a search.
im interested one day doing this too. one thing is picking a tour pack rack.ive seen some i think i mite like better then hd? or maybe thay are hd not shure but have more crome/custom look. adds a lot of chrome style to your bike for the buck. and if i istall it .that would be better. if i f^^^ck *p that would suck. use tape to lay out pattern and really take your time.
I know that no matter how soft a pack or whatever you tie down on bags for a trip. dirt will creep under and act like sand paper on paint. so good luck! like to help/learn more.
The HD ones come with a good template, so as long as you have any skills, it should be pretty easy. I did mine, but made sure I laid down some good silicon on the holes for waterproofness (is that a word?)... Would be expensive to screw it up though....
