I agree. I was no mechanic before I bought my motorcycles. (I didn't even do my own oil changes in my cars!) But I have really enjoyed getting to know my bikes by working on them. A stage 1 is a GREAT place to start. Harleys are designed in such a way as to make them easy for the owner to work on them. When people here refer to "bolt on" that is literally true.

BTW, for Christmas, my youngest son (a college junior) bought me an old "hippie" book from 1974 called "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." The author uses his willingness to understand and work on his motorcycle (as compared to his riding buddy's disinterest/unwillingness) as the framework for what is essentially a philisophical discussion. The backdrop of the book is a ride the author took from Minnesota to California with his young son 2-up and his buddy and his wife on their bike. It's a good read.

Another helper in general, is going from duel exhaust, to a 2-into-1 single pipe or dummy pipe for the duel look. If you're looking to maximize horsepower and torque, most will tell you that 2-into-1 is the way to go. I have seen where new engineering has minimized the horse power loss in new "chamber" technology for 2-into-1-into-2 exhausts, but those are PRICEY. Personally, I'm going with Razor shorties that are baffled and exit before the bags. I'm sacrificing some horse and torque for good old fashioned NOISE...cuz after all....LOUD, FAST, RULES. LOL

I agree with the earler poster give Jamie at fuelmoto a call or drop him a emai.l He can set you up with every thing you need as a package including a catless head pipe, unless you can find a deal on a 09 head pipe. Get a service manual, you will want it later anyways (these bikes are easy to work on and the warrenty doesnt last forever). Get a couple of harbour frieght tourque wrenches 1 in inch -pounds, 1 in foot - pounds (currently you can both for around $20 each ) after that the only thing you will need that you might not have is a 3/16 allen wrench that you may have to butcher up to remove the stock air cleaner. couple hours time and you are ready to roll.

Another great place to look for parts is directharleyparts.com
I bought my exhaust from them and saved a couple of hundred over Dennis Kirk.

Use this forum search function and ask for help with anything that perplexes you, that's the original intent of this forum. Am sure there are fellow riders there in Ok or nearby that could come over and help if you hit a roadblock. Just get a high flo AC, open exhaust and a cam of your choice, then ride down to Dallas and get the bike tuned properly

Yea... what Master said. With one HUGE exception.
Trailer that joker down to the tuner! Depending on what you install, that V-Twin may melt before you get 10 miles on a stock map!

Well I think you've talked me into it. The experince and the money saved will put a new set of bars on...(not to mention i am a cheapskate ). I will def check out Fuelmoto. Too many people say good things about him. Still worried about the whole tuner thing as I am a carb guy. Maybe Jamie can talk me through it. Thanks for all the good replies and I am sure I will have some more stupid questions as I am going to start working on this thing myself.

Wish me luck and ride safe. I will post an update when it gets back rolling.

!!!Boomer!!!

Computer Nerd by trade, and I am definately do not claim to be a wrencer but I'm working on it. I purchased a new to me bike a week ago and since I have changed oil (all three holes) changed the power commander tune(map) twice, and added AC cover.

To do the above changes: 2 calls to pops, 3 calls to Fuel Moto, and one to the stealership.
My point is as long as you are willing to learn there is plenty of available help. This place has been my number one go to place for any assistance I have ever needed.

Good Luck!
