Default 2007 96" cam chain inspection

Been checking the factory manual and it seems that all it addresses is changing the cams. It does give chain pad tolerances. What exactly does it take to check the tensioner tolerances? What gaskets, parts etc. does it take to check them providing the pads are in tolerance. What does it take if only the pads need changing. I've wrenched most of my life on Limey's. New to the HD's. It seems that I have a noise coming from the cam cover when cold to warm. Once everything is up to temp. the noise is gone.

Same gaskets as the cam change needs. Fuel Moto sells the whole gasket kit but I am sure you can get it from the dealer. Will include the rocker cover gasket as well since you are going to have to remove those to get the push rods out. You are going to have to remove the inner cam plate to inspect the inner tensioner. When I did my cam swap mine was pitted, they had some problems with some of the material from my understanding.

How many miles on the bike?

I took mine in when it had 40000 on it and ask them if they could check them (2005 wide glide) and they said it would be just as much just to check them as to replace them so
I had them replaced. Didn't look at them when I picked up the bike so don't know how they wore

You have the new style hydraulic tensioners in the 07, they shouldn't need to be checked for another 20-30K. I haven't heard of any problems with the new style, some have checked at 70K & still looked good. The above responses were for the old style spring loaded ones, some people don't read very the posts very well.

I take it if I just pull the outer cover that I could seee the primary cam tensioner and that if it looked good I could assume that the secondary cam tensioner would also be good.

Well I did read his post and mine were pitted at 23K miles. There were some early 96" bikes had some bad material in the tensioner pads which caused this pitting. That in turn could cause the tensioner pad to break apart. They end up changing the material slightly and the color of them is now slightly different, I think it got darker. I think DAWG on here told me about it.

Here is a pic of mine inner pad that I ended up replacing when I did my cam swap

Telling the OP he should be alright when he posted he has a noise coming from the Cam cover sounds like maybe you didn't read his post very well.

The pic of the tensioner pad I posted was the inner pad, the outer one looked fine. I am in no way saying this is your problem, but IMHO if you have a noise coming from your cam chest, I would be tearing it down to see what is wrong or take it to someone who can.
