Yesterday, a group of four went for a Sunday ride up to Badger, CA. I was leading the group up a small paved road. There was a SUV in front of us who pulled over to the right for what we thought was to allow us to pass. Suddenly, the SUV starting making a U turn right in front of me. I was going maybe 50 mph. The road was a little wet due to a recent rain shower. I had no place to go but straight ahead. All I could do was grab all the brake I could and hope for the best. My eyes must have been the size of pool ***** and you couldnt drive a 16 penny nail up my rear with a sledge hammer. So, what happen; my ABS brakes saved me. Straight line, full braking, no skidding just stopping power. The driver of the SUV stopped mid street and just stared at me she knew she hadnt taken the time to look over her shoulder. She dam near killed me. The group went around her and continued the journey. As I was driving along I thought, man that was close and then the fear came over me. Had it not been for the ABS system I dont know how it would have turned out but there is one thing for sure, in that split second decision you don't have time to think about pumping your brakes so they won't lock up or laying the bike down, you are grabbing and pushing on the brakes really hard and hoping you don't die.
Glad you and your group are all ok. I'll bet that was one hell of a scare.
I have only tried my ABS once, "on purpose", and it seemed to work just fine. I have read a few Posts here that said they didn't like ABS, but here is a prefect example of how it CAN save your life When I traded in my 09 FLHRC (non ABS) they had my new 2012 Bike on the showroom floor. It had everything I wanted, right color and everything, except no ABS and I didn't buy it. I waited 3 weeks until they found me one that did, and I did the deal. I'm glad I waited.
Glad this ended well. THIS is exactly why I wanted ABS, and I'm glad it worked. Yes in theory the expert bikers out there might be able to stop quicker because they intuitively know the friction point of the tires on wet pavement, but I doubt it, especially in an emergency.
Close call! Glad you came out of it intact. Old schoolers say bah humbug on abs but here is a perfect example of how it can save you. Any upgrade for safety is a good upgrade!!!! Never trust a cager.......
One thing about ABS brakes though. That some might not know. You stay straight. But your back tire still will go right or left a lilttle. At least mine does. But you do stay straight.
