Not sure if this is a factor or not, but they also changed the rear tire size on the '02 model. I know that the tire on the '02 was a little wider, but could it also be that the '02 and up rear tire is actually not quite as tall as the earlier tires, which is why HD went to the taller gearing? Like I said, I don't know, but it's another thing which needs to be considered when comparing '02 and up HD's to earlier models.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the bigger wider tire wasn't until 04 on the Touring models. In 02 it was the Softails and Dyna's only, maybe even the Sportsers.

The wider tires are not taller. However, if they were a great bit taller, you would want to put in lower gears to compensate for the tire change, not taller ones like the later bikes have.
ok let's throw something else out there. could you get close to the same results by just changing the drive pulley on the final drive instead of the primary. it will cost much less and the starter would'nt have to work so hard
I would really appreciate if someone could post the stock tooth counts for primary and final drives for the 07's.
Does altering the ratio on the final drive throw off your speedometer, and if so is there a way to correct this ?
I talked to a shop owner and he said. Changes to final drive will affect the speedo if the sensor ison the trans. You can get an adaptor that is programmed to correct any changes for around $150.
Over the years, I've been involved with and/or raced a bunch of different things (motorcycles, karts, RC Cars, Dirt Cars, Asphalt Cars)at different levels, from local to regional, tonational. I/we always faced a similar quandry. Do you build a motor with kahunas that will pull a numerically lower gear ratio, or do you build one to twist and let it spin up faster. Try as I might, I always got better and more reliable results building "grunt" to pull more gear. If your engine "will pull it", it's gonna be faster than the same engine with a numerically higher gear ratio. I say that with some trepidation, because you have to have a motor with serious torque for this to work. On a "typical" HD, I'm sure it will feel faster if you let it try to spin up faster using the 3.37 vs 3.15.
I do not know where the threshold is or if it's reasonably attainable, but for now I think mine is fine right where it's at.
I will follow this with curiosioty. I know this is a very common mod that is frequently discussed on other forums. Good luck to the "testers"! Do keep us advised!
Here is one, of several, way to look at it that works for some. At a given MPH, changing to a higher numeric drive ratio is simply moving your RPM to a higher point on the HP graph, resulting in more engine power andpower to the ground. Your peak drive wheel torque occurswhen you pick a gear that puts your engineclosest to its peak HP due tothe ability to multiply enginetorquewith gear ratios. However, picking a gear that puts you at6000 RPM for max wheel torque will have othernegative affects, again, to gain something you have to be willing to give up something.
the screaming eagle package part#40200-02 changes gear ratio also here they are 1st stock is10.12:1 s.e. is12.04:1 2nd is 6.96:1/ 8.28:1 3rd is 4.94:1/ 5.90:1 4th is 3.87:1/ 4.60:1 and 5th is 3.15:1/ 3.75:1 i also have a s.e.6speed and dont know what that cobo is but i think i am going to like it if anybody else knows about this package let me know thanks
Screaming eagle package part#40200-02 is only $134.95 list. Only need to replace the front sproket and chain.3.75 final ratio....know thats something you should feel.
Forthe 07's it doesn't look like there is anything available yet. Will have to wait
I have a basic 95" with hi flow kit and touring mufflers on my kitchen sink 04 roadglide... pretty tame by the standards here. Knowing that because I wasn't going to have the $$ to screw with the motor for a few years, I got a long term warranty which included the big bore components..and the se 6spd gearset. After a lot of numerical research, what I did do, however, since the pulleys were coming off to swap gearsets, was drop the trans pulley down from 32 to 30 teeth-( which also necessitated a belt change by the way). What this did was give me at least an additional 7%? torque down low, slightly better take-off, and I can use the 6th gear from 65 mph (60 on lowering inclines and downhills), instead of waiting til 75mph, resulting in more use of it and better mileage at speeds most of my 5spd riding buddies stay at in usual hwy traffic. The bike just hums along, and will walk away from those with 95" kits like mine in their roadkings, that onlyhave the 5 spd, so you can have your cake and eat it too. Ican't waitto see what happens when I add headwork and cams down the road . Bear in mind that the se gearset has an .89 final, and the baker an .86 final...which would allow you higher than a 3.37 final and still give you a bit of an overdrive.
