I just got off the phone with my local indy shop owner. We were discussing primary gearing. First, let me say that 80-90% of my riding is on back roads, state highways and such. I very seldom hit the slab. Anyway, we were discussing primary gearing. The '03 to '06 have a higher primary gearing than the '02 and older bikes. He said, and agreed with Mr Bob Woods, that changing the primary gearing on a stage 1 88" to 3.37 would allow it to run side by side with a stock 103. Did I hear that right? A gear change and an 88 can keep up with a 103? YES. Only through 4th gear though. After that, the 103 will start pulling away slightly. WOW! How much cruising rpm will it cost you? He says 180 rpm at 70 mph. Not bad.
Scenario.....
One of the guys I ride with has an '02 Roadglide. 95" with unknown cams. He bought the bike used as it is. This bike has the most phenomenal accelleration of any "Mild" 95" I have ever ridden with. Why? It has the 3.37 primary gearing from the factory! This bike has over 50,000 miles on it and has always been one of the strongest bikes in the club.
So, in closing....
I think I am going to look into a primary gear change!
I have 3:37 primary gearing. It does accerate well. However, I am skeptical that a bone stock 88" with 3:37 will run side by side with a 103" with 3:15 gearing.
Me too, but thats 2 experienced builders that say it will. If anyone would know, I would think that the man behind Woods cams would. He does not make any of the parts for this upgrade, so he does not have a dog in the race.....
Just when I thought I was done...........you guys go and bring this up........LOL
I'm curious what's involved in the gear change, it sounds like a total disassembly of the primary and swapping out a bunch of stuff.......a lot of work.
So my '05 has 3.13 gearing?
It works well for me, and I think I'm leaving well-enough alone.

Steve, I am tellin ya....this is an awesome upgrade! I have been thinking about it for a long time, but no one put it like they did today. I knew it would improve acceleration, but never thought it would be THAT much. I'll go ahead and say it......when I get the money put back, IT'S A DONE DEAL!
