Default ebay bearing puller

Hello all,

In the middle of my cam change and I am using the ebay bearing puller/installer. It's this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Harley-Davidso...9740513&sr=8-3

It consist of a collet, a collet internal rod, an extraction tube, a nut and a washer. You push the collet through the bearing, then push an internal rod through the collet. Then you slip the tube over the collet, install the washer and nut on the collet end, and then screw the nut down, forcing it and the washer onto the rear of the extraction tube. This pulls the bearing out of the case. I believe the collet and tube are specifically sized for the bearings (148 or 168 size), and I am using this on my 2011 RKC.

The problem is that the collette seems too big to fit into the bearing. I'm afraid to push on this for fear of damaging the bearing and losing needles into the engine. Am I missing something on this? Thanks.

I did a cam install last year also on a 2011 RKC and used almost the same tool and had the same problem. I took long strips of sandpaper and polished up the end of the tool that pushes through the bearing. Once I did this around the end of the tool several times it went through the bearing and worked like a charm.

Polish and lube it and tap it and it will probably pop right in

It looks exactly like the one from Georges Garage. Their instructions tell you to tap it through the bearing with a hammer. I did my cams this weekend too. On one bearing I had to tap with a hammer. On the other I could push it through pretty easily. Make sure the rod is completely out of the collet before pushing the collet through the bearing. Both times the bearing came right out of the engine with no drama. Getting the rod out of the middle of the tool after you've pulled the bearing is a pain.

I did not use that tool for my cam job so I can't say for sure. I used the Gary Beatty tool and it was also a tight fit, but worked well. On mine you just sort of push on it til it "pops" through the bearing. Took a little coaxing but not much. Push the collet through, then insert the rod to expand the collet. At least that's how mine worked. Hope that helps.

As mentioned above. Polish the end of collet and lube. I had to do the same and mine works great now. I to did not like the idea of hammering it against the bearing that hard

Try squeezing it together with vice grips first

I just used Gary's tool and it worked fine. It seems large but it fits.

You can use a small zip tie to keep the fingers together while inserting. Just cut the zip tie after the tool is in.
