How many folks ride at night. I mean not just coming or going to work or the little trip to the local bar but, actually go riding at night? I went one time with a group I can think off. The only other night rides where just to a local Bike Night.
When I take off on my longer trips, I usually depart at 430 am and get a couple of dark hours in before the traffic picks up. Do enjoy it but do watch out for the wildlife.
One of the trips I take often is planned to ride at night. 11pm until about 6am. Its especially nice on the hot summer nights. No traffic to deal with, just a few of us taking our time.
I know it not "the best decision" if avoidable. However, i LOVE riding at night. I usually like the interstate at night...less animals to be concerned with, not eliminated, but def. less.
One of the most enjoyable rides I can remember was a ride home some years ago from a flat track race in Lima, OH. About 3 hours from home, full moon (visibility was excellent), weather had just cleared up after a short downpour that ended the races early. I was riding in the middle of a group, found an "oldies" station on the stereo, put my feet up on the highway bars and just enjoyed the ride. Course, that was before my night vision got so bad and I hadn't yet heard all the stories about deer and other wildlife/motorcycle accidents or how cagers just can't see a motorcycle that well at night. Nowadays I limit my night riding to "can't avoid it" situations or as some others have mentioned, starting out early in the morning before sunrise.
