Default SENA vs SCALA RIDER

Thinking seriously of purchasing a set of comm units for myself and GF. Just recently began wearing FF helmets and see the need for better communication from bike to bike.

Have searched the Forum for recent posts but didnt find much recent.

I am looking at the Scala G4. Who has it? Let me know the pros and cons.
Not really concerned about much more than a good intercom capability between me and the GF while riding. Will consider the SENA as an alternative.

Also, side question. Do you stick the boom mike up inside your FF helmet to use (ok, no jokes here please)

thanks!!

I don't have the G4. I have the Scala Multiset. There are only minor differences though. My buddy that has the G4 loves the hell out of that thing. The main differences that you may care about are the distance between bikes. I think its a mile now. Mine is maybe half a mile. And the G4 allows for turn by turn GPS directions to be over the bluetooth. Mine does not. Only phone call features over it. If you always wear FF now, then you will love it at all speeds. Half helmet and anything above 60 and there is too much wind noise. Yes, the unit attaches to the outside of the helmet, but the boom mic adjusts to fit right in the open space in front of your mouth in the FF.

Sorry, but I can't say anything for the SENA. I have never tried it.

I can also vouch for Cardo's customer service. We had some weird issues with our set and we sent it back to them after the warranty and they still fixed it. They actually sent us brand new boom mics.

Hope this helps some.

Webbikeworld.com has reviews of both units and,i think, a comparison test. After reading both reviews, I went with the SENA system, to replace our Scala Q2 (preceeded the G4).

I have had the Sena units for 3 years now. I can listen to music bluetoothed from my cell phone and it's crystal clear. With a tap on the unit, I can connect to my son on his motorcycle and have a conversation. We both wear ff helmets and have been about 1/2 mile apart and not in sight of each other with the clear communications. I have "HAD" to take and make phone calls and the units silence the music, allow me to take the call with a tap on the unit and the caller can't tell I'm on my bike doing 75 plus. I've ridden with and without windshields and there really isn't any difference. I like the size of the volume ****. It can be used easily with heavy winter gloves.

I hope this helps. I can't say anything about the Scala other than I considered them. Here's a link to where I found the best price and outstanding customer service. You will have to join the forum, but they are great guys over there as well.
www.advrider.com Search for Sena and RocketMoto and you will see a topic about a group buy. RocketMoto people are fantastic.

Good luck!

I have the G4 and very happy with it.

Main benefits over older models seem to be distance (although I think a mile is somewhat "fair weather" but working on the assumption that it is all relative they are better) and battery life.

I have found the battery life on the G4 to be excellent

The boom mike is for open face. If you look on their website you will see a wired mike that sticks (Velcro) to the inside of a full face. Your really don't want to use the boom on a full face, it will annoy you intensely!

Oh, and I do stick the boom inside... but hey, it's my boom mike and I'll stick it where ever I want. LOL

Diesel is right, but it depends on your helmet. I wear a full face with the flip up front, so there are times in traffic and heat that I want to open the helmet. That would put my mic up in the air. Using the boom it stays where I can use it, so that is my preference. Just something else to consider....

Actually the new helmets are modulars so this was a concern. I had also read that the wired mike was problematic for some folks

I have the older scala and the wind noise would keep the mic activated not allowing it to turn off hence the other rider could listen to my radio and breathing etc. Not something I desired

my wife and I have the Scala G4 set and are very happy with them the distance from the intercom is excellent. The intercom is the main reason i bought these but the other features are really nice as well the bluetooth music from the Iphone is very clear as well. great purchase.

this is what I am hoping to hear more of, I really dont forsee using the bluetooth phone connection but my GF might want to plug her MP3 player in to the unit.....have heard that the music coming from the MP3 players is pretty tinny due to the speakers not being stereophonic.....my main desire is good intercom between the two of us
