Default Rusty Black Thunderheader

Hello all,

As usual always appreciate the experiences and help everyone always gives. Best site on the internet when it comes to your scoot. My question is if anyone has had experience with rusting on their thunder header pipe. I have a black 2-1 exhuast on my 2010 SG and recently noticed some lite rust at the tip. I took it off and found much more rust on the underside. I believe it come from the salt on the roads. It was a nice day and a salt truck was laying down the liquid salt on the bridges for the weather moving in. My heat shields look fine. I just don't want my pipe rusting away. Any suggestions? Should i just grind off the rust and use a high temp paint? Maybe get the pipe ceramic coated?

you can have it ceramic coated, or an old trick I have used is to use lime away on the rusty spots, then lots of water , then dry ,and apply wd40 to get rid of the water, then oil it.

bump bump dump. Had a black TH on my old sportster and within 1000 miles of installed it was discoloring. (i ride in all weather conditions so it saw it all) besides that I loved the pipe. Considering one for my RK now. I've heard from a lot of people that the ceramic coating of the pipe is the way to go... Or get a chrome one...

The black Thunderheader is ceramic coated. It's just not that high quality of a job.

I have a black one on my bagger and a chrome one on my Dyna. Had a chrome one on my '04 RK Custom too. I personally prefer the ceramic coated one.

If I were in your situation, I'd take it off and send it to Jet Hot. I think they do the 2-1 for $250. At least that's what they told me in December when I was at the Performance Racing Industry show in FL. Heat shields will be extra, but probably worth it so it all matches.

I'd worry more about the salt getting on the motor and the wheels. That salt just loves aluminum,I rode once and only once when there was still salt on the roads and the road was dry.I started getting all these misterious spots all over my wheels and front of the motor come spring time .Never again.

I thought the pipe was already ceramic coated, but it seemed liked a low quality job. The no way i wanted to be behind that salt truck. I am going to ask my powder coater bout doing a ceramic coat on my pipes. I would rather be done with rusting forever. Will the Ceramic coat ever rust like the current coating?

I had the same problem 2 years ago with my Thunderheader. I took it off 2 winters ago and the powdecoater put on a high temp black powder. Then this last year it started rusting in the same places so off it came and back to the coater. He said when he sand blasted it the stuff flew off like cheap paint. Turns out I got a bad batch. So he redid it for free and all is well.

I have several friends that have had the high temp powder put on and they have held up great.
