Default 103 Heads

Well, I just wanted to get some opinions. My dad said opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one.

Here's the story. I had been having problem with hot starts ever since I upgraded my 96 to a 103 and had 255 cams put on it. It is tuned correctly, I believe. I decided to pull the heads and have ACRs (automatic compression releases for you in rio linda) drilled and placed on the bike. I took them to my local dealer who has contact with the machine shop that does them for HD. $150 for drilling. I was also given the option of having them ported and polished as well as drilled for about $525. I decided not to put the extra money into it and just get drilled (the heads, $mart@ss).

Today, I find out that the machine shop screwed up and ported and polished the heads as well as drilling them. The dealer said same price, $150.

What would you do, keep the 255 cams and just ride it? Have it re-tuned? Do something else? ( forgot to mention I am riding with V&H Vance & Hines true duals and Monster Ovals)

Like I said, I am looking for opinions, not a$$holes.

Thanks.

You should still be OK. The port and polish is going to open up the ports "some", but it shouldn't be to the extent that you saw from the increase in cubic inches. The real difference should be that your heads are simply going to flow better. See how it runs or ask the dealer to upload a new tune since their machine shop guys did the wrong work.

The ACRs are the ticket. I did a 96 to 103 build with the 255 cam when they first released it. That combo screams for the ACRs. Every one I know doin that upgrade had hot start issues as well as compensator issues. I'd pop those babies on and go. The 255 cam is a good cam but has no overlap.

Nice. Get it dynotuned for the added airflow. You are going to be able to pull trucks out of the ditch with that bike.

You can crutch poor flowing heads with a bigger cam (to a certain extent) but good flowing heads will enhance a small cam and extend the power band. Put it back together, get it tuned properly and ride it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

No problems I see, but you do need a new tune. I assume you are using SE Super Tuner, since dealer is doing this for you. Get it done and ride.

Personally, I'd get it tuned right off the bat. If those new heads flow significantly better than they did before, your probably going to be running lean and thus, hot! If you do decide to just ride it, I'd keep an eye on engine temp. It would also pay to disable the compression releases, and measure the cranking pressure, to get an idea of where you stand, compression wise. A good tune, will do nothing but enhance whats been done.
