I dont know how it knows but it does. I have done long trips on my bike I have used trip A-B and remaining miles. That time was not there with stock radio. All the audio threads and I am surprised I never seen mention of this. It does not keep time that well it was a hour off oh ya day light savings
I was looking at a bike on the show room floor(can't remember model but a '12),and it had a digital tach on the odometer/clock/trip meter/miles remaining. All I could say was...huh !
My Father in law has a 2008 Dyna Low Rider which didn't have the radio in the first place and his has a built in clock on it. I bet when Harley added the radio, the clock display gets repressed so you don't have two clocks. I wonder if HD's have a black box like cars where they time stamp data like speeding and brakes locking up etc. good luck.

Pretty sure newer Sportsters have the digital tach. Not sure about others.
Waydumminit! - Are you saying that if I remove my HD head unit, that the bike "knows" that and magically starts showing a clock in the odometer? Wow! That's incredible! Kind of like the old thermos bottle joke - "but how do it know?"
when I removed my stock gas gauge on my Indian, a digital gauge showed up on my speedo display. Later when I put the gas gauge back in, the digital gauge disappeared. It's magical!
i have a 2012 streetglide and installed a aquaticav radio and my clock hasnt appeared, how do i make it do that?
I installed the Aquatic AV head unit in my 12 SG and the clock appeared. A couple of years ago now but any questions I had then I would check with the audio gurus on here, they are some of the most knowledgable and helpful guys you will find anywhere hands down.
