S&S headpipe - $525 + labor
SE street tuner - $250 + labor
Dyno tune - ???

Doesn't sound too far off - dealerships have a lot of mouths to feed.

Street tuner is $450, Dyno is probably $300, so 525+450+300=$1275, I cant imagine they want $725 to install the header.

Heritagehawg are you missing an item? Maybe an RSD Air Cleaner for $400?

I was quoting this:
41000008B

IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY Contact dealer for pricing and availability.

For use with '07-later EFI Dyna, Softail and Touring models (except Trike).

MSRP US $249.95
The local tuner here charges $150/hr for SE Tuning.

I'm getting following (keep in mind these are CDN $ - always higher)

Dyno labour 3.5 hrs = 311.50
V&H Power Duals labour 3 hrs = 267.00
SE Pro Tuner 521.95
V&H Power Duals 614.95

Total $1715 + taxes

So $2000 sounds high to me as well.

Nope...Cheaper yes, but not real adjustable. For close to the same money, I would call Jamie at fuelmotousa.com and get a Powercommander. For a bit more though, I would recommend the Power vision. It is the best thing out there right (IMHO) and fuelmoto has GREAT customer service.

having established the top end of the expense range, there are less expensive options.
Dependent on the owners interest in shopping around, researching and abilities/interest in doing some of the work.

The Fuel moto option is one, they are a forum sponsor and alot of riders here are happy with their stuff ( although I wouldn't use the current power commander device on my bike if it were free).

as for a header pipe, gutting the header can be about free for the rider who has a bandsaw and welder ( there is a photo tutorial on gutting the cat), buying an 09 header ( no cat, cat is 2010+) and o2 adapter bungs, or the various aftermarket headers which all seem to be over $400.

mufflers: many options, some riders who have removed the cat are happy with the sound of the stock mufflers afterward.

Muffler options incl. the 09 headers or later gutted cat headers show up on the forum classifieds all the time.

the bang for buck intake is the ness big sucker ( with chrome backing plate, not the cast grey) for about $120 shipped on ebay from easternpc- install easy and takes 30 minutes at most. ( this does not require tank removal or throttle body brace like some others incl. the S/E)

Tuning- there are options and these boards are full of questions and tuning problems. ( a more complex tuner is required if going beyond "stage 1" such as cams, head work etc.)

The thundermax seems to get the fewest complaints.

I know guys with the H-D stage 1 download who are happy with it.

I use nightrider.com XIEDS ( $125) and they work fine for me.

I do have a fuelpak which I will be experimenting with on my next big road trip- get a bunch of riding in as is, then swap in the fuel pak and see how she does in comparison.
If no big change with my set up, it'll be for sale.

Warranty: if you have a factory warranty most tuning devices will void it if the factory finds out the rev limit was defeated and the motor over reved and the valves fell out.
If the dealer tells you the stuff they want to sell you won't void the warranty, get that in writing on the work order ( and keep that in the safety deposit box)

My stage 1 cost $450.

09 so no headers costs ( deliberately went for an 09 because of the header)
ness big sucker- $114
xieds- $115
Screaming Eagle/ Supertrapp Nightsticks used- $200
end caps and discs to tune the mufflers- I had already, maybe $20 worth

mike

Fuel Moto Stage 1 A/C + Power Vision with MAP from Fuel Moto = $549
Vance and Hines Dresser Duals = $390 (Fuel Moto)
Rinehart 4" Slip ons (Fuel Moto) = $535
Labor from the dealer = $300

Total = $1750
