I was watching some videos on YouTube from a Victory dealer in Arizona compare the HD and Victory motors and he was talking about the low oil pressure at idle in the HD motor. He then said there was an upgrade for the oil pump so there was constant oil pressure in the motor at idle. Please forgive my ignorance, I know if oil pressure is too low "engine go kaput," but has anyone heard of this so call upgrade?
Heard something about a heavier spring in the oil pressure regulator. Keeps the oil higher. But it won't do much at idle. I wonder if an electric pump might work...
I think the Newer models come with a higher volume oil pump. The cam plate upgrade also includes it. The hydra cam chain tensioners may be a reason they went to a higher volume. There is also 2 different higher volume pumps I believe.
I know a higher volume oil pump is included in the SE Hydraulic Tensioner upgrade kit. I'm sure you could buy the high volume pump by itself if you wanted.
But this isn't an issue if you are running your idle at recommened RPM.
I have a carb and sometimes it decides on it's own to idle nice and slow like an old Shovel. Sounds cool, but it comforting to me know that I know its getting the oil now that I have upgraded the oil pump. I don't let it do this for a long time, but its fun to rub it on on all my EFI riding buddies.
Mostly a pre-07 concern, 07 up have a bigger pump no major benefit to upgrade. Either way low idle pressure is not necessarily and indicator of a problem. The Twin Cam oiling system is a high volume low pressure design. That said my 06 with the little pump has not shown any signs of oil startvation issues yet.
I have an 04 with a 95" kit. I just did the Screaming Eagle HYD tensioner upgrade with the new and improved hi-volume oil pump.
Before I used to see pressures near the "0" mark at idle and now at idle whith warm oil I see it just below the "32PSI" tick mark. at anything above idle she pegs the needle

Those values concern me more than something low, excessively high pressure may indicate a problem also, misaligned cam plate, partial port blockage somewhere in the system, stuck pressure relief plunger, or maybe its just fine.
