I couldn't stand my air seat. I couldn't wait to get rid of it.
Likewise. I didn't find it very comfortable, mostly because I didn't like the riding position at all. Too high, too close to the tank. Soft ride, yes, but beyond ugly, and that 50-cent plastic battery cover was the last straw. It's a utilitarian seat, not what I want on a modern touring bike. My Corbin seat is much more comfortable, especially on long days.
So far, the discussion is about new police bikes from the dealer. What about older models?
I'm looking at a 2008 FLHP, 103, ABS, with 21,000 miles. Stock engine except for SE mufflers and air cleaner. Guy is asking $9500. Claims to have all service records. Before I go look at this, what should I be cautious about? I've been in search of a RK or SG, but this like a possible option for my next build.
. I will also have to change the seat no matter what I buy.
.
If that is anything like my FLHTPI, it has run flats and they are not officially sanctioned for 2 up riding, which is why there is a solo seat and no passenger pegs.
A P spec bike purchased for the right price is a blank canvas, but there are differences in the wiring, there are missing parts you take for granted (pegs!) the hand controls are different ( I changed the rights to civilian, I left the left alone I like the cop horn button)
Just make sure you factor in the costs to convert it to 2 up if you are going that route
And get the P bike manual along with the service manual
Got my 11 for $14400 with 1900 miles almost a year ago to the day. Parade and VIP escort....dept had no MC division....find out who had it and call, checked on a couple and officers very willing to talk about them. Came Fully converted....tires, seat, boards. No issues, love it.....lmao every time I see prices on new and most used. Put 8k on since and honestly if sold it would ask std RK pricing....with minor mods I did it looks sharp and unique, yet right. Paint as good as non cop IMO....but it is simple vivid black.
Some rode hard...especially trainer bikes...walk away. Look under and bottom of crash and bag bars for scrapes. Great starting point to make a unique bike.
Love the pucks, lid opening, tach (don't even look at speedo anymore). Wiring was easy to figure out and gives lots of options to easy wire accessories...switched. Hi output alternator allows anything I can think of. Has battery tender connect and heat deflectors std and oil cooler....don't feel heat others complain about....but summer was below avg.. Have heard cop bikes after 09 got top 10% spec motors....but not sure what specs specifically, or if true.
I am looking at a 2011 FLHP Road King with only 1 mile on it, I can buy this bike for only $15,756 plus tax. Why do they price the police bikes less? Do they just not hold their value over time?
I have looked at the FLHRs and there is not that much difference in the bikes.
Am I making a mistake buying a police RK?
I like the hard bags, 103 engine, and plain rims.
you want to see a police road king, heres one i bought with 850 miles on it in 2005. 144K later this is what remains.
Bought my 03 Police Road King March 11 04, had 9 miles on it for under 13k. I have changed the seat to a two up Road King seat from HD. Replaced the pucks with push buttons and just a year ago replaced the radio platform with a Harley luggage rack and backrest. Now the bike is 10 years old has 58000 miles on it and would not even consider selling or trading it. I have it just where I want and it all fits me. Guess my point is if you like the Police bike go for it, you will change some things no matter what you buy, we all do. So go ahead make it yours and enjoy!
The new police bikes do not come with run-flat tires anymore, They have the same tires you get on a standard Road King. I believe the dealer told me 2008 was the last year for run-flats.
That is correct. '08 was the last year. My '08 FLHTP had' em, but my '13 does not. The handling of my '13 is hands down better than the '08 BTW.

The '08's with ABS ate front wheel bearings like crazy. My '08 went through 5 sets of front wheel bearings in the first 12,000 miles. Our fleet mechanic finally figured out it was the right side bearing (non-abs type) that was failing. He used a spacer and put an ABS type bearing in the right side and solved the problem. I don't know if Harley ever made an official fix on this, though. Virtually every bike in our fleet suffered from this problem.
