so, if the plastic backing plate is gone, and the pleats of the filter are exposed to the air, and you have free-er flowing mufflers then you have a "stage 1"

good for 7 to 10 HP usually, depending on components chosen.

You can generally tell if your carb has been modded if the plug over the idle mixture adjust has been removed ( which requires, pulling the carb and drilling the plug out).

a bone stock carb will often "sneeze" ( backfire through the air cleaner) as the motors revs past about 1800 rpm when leaving a light.
If that isn't happening, then your carb is probably tuned pretty well to compensate for the increased air flow.

MPH on a well- tuned carb will be about 42 or better at 65 MPH

Mike
Then it has a stage one for all the reasons you have stated: the plug has been drilled out and the pleats are exposed. It is not well tuned however, which is why I wanted to know. It coughs or "sneezes" frequently at acceleration.

Carbs were offered on HD's up to 2006. 06 was the last year you could get a carb. FI on a 2001 is Magnetti Marelli (MM) which is harder to tune than the 02 and later Delphi injection. It takes an experienced tuner that knows what he is doing to work with the MM's. Because of that, a lot of folks that had the 99-01 MM's would often switch them over to carbs.

Thanks Dawg. I had a 2000 RK with the MM injection. The original owner had a PCII on it and I never touched it. It ran great as far as I could tell back then. I sold it to my brother and it's still running good today.

I didn't know carbs were available as late as 06. As Gomer would say "Shazamm"

Lwood the above posts have you covered. On some models (like my 07) there was also an intake solenoid that came off with the plastic backing plate. There is a tell tale cable left tied up somewhere going to nothing behind the football cover.

You do want to make sure your carb is jetted to compensate for the increased air flow. In the old days we could just look at the spark plugs for a light tan color on the electrode which meant "normal" mix. A white ash color meant lean and if not rectified, over time could burn you valve seats. We actually used to pop the float bowl unscrew our brass jet and drill it out with the next larger size bit that would not go thru the OEM hole. Then we would run it awhile and check the plugs. Sometimes we had to drill it out again.

With ECM's it's a bit harder to read plugs with any accuracy. The carburated models didn't have an ECM but rather an Ignition Module. I'm not real up on how much they monitor the A/F mixture, but you need to make sure you are not running too lean. I would give heed to Dawg's info on getting it tuned if the engine doesn't seem to running right or it's running real hot.
