Well bike is back in the shop with 536 miles on it. I have only been able to ride it maybe 5 days since it was in the shop 2 weeks ago. I was on vaction and it was in the shop getting the handlebars put on.
First time they said it was lose wires on the battery. I checked those wires and checked the ground as well as the wire the other end of the positive side of the battery. It goes to the Stator? Not sure I am not a mechanic.
Talked to my sales guy and he said in the last week he has had 3 people with electrical issues with their 2012 touring bikes. One is having a similar issue another one just quit on him and won't start.
Going on a trip hopefully tomorrow but now I am a little worried because I don't want to break down in the middle of no where.
To those that are going to post it is something to do with my handlebars this problem was happening before the handlebar install.
The charging system is not hard to diagnose...But I have to wonder is the battery not holding a charge while not in use...Or is it discharging while riding it...The system will set a code for undercharging and overcharging...and also a low battery voltage code...There really isn't any excuse for them not to find the problem and fix it.
There is a known issue with a large batch of voltage regulators on the 2012s. My Road King was in the shop for a month waiting on the back ordered regulator to come in.
Voltage regulator is shot but it won't fail for them but the codes it throws are consistent to it being bad. They have a 2012 that came in with a damaged fender they are going to pull that regulator off that bike and put it on mine.
The voltage regulators are on back order. Looks like this is a known issue and quite a few 2012's are having problems.
Went for my 1000 mile service today. Dealer has 6 2012 touring bikes with voltage regulator problems. They have started taking them off new bikes to get customer bikes back on the road. It worked for 3 of them including mine but the other 3 are still having issues.
Comforting to know. I have a 2012 heritage...wonder if they go bad prematurely, like in 12 month or so. Something to keep in the back of my head while traveling. I'll be sure to have a list of harley dealers with me.
I've let mine sit for 2 weeks and it started right up.....I did keep it on a battery tender all winter though. Due to work, I've let it sit for a week, I plugged it in to my battery tender and within 30 minutes, it was in float mode.
thank u all for the info, 2012 FHLTK here, same issues only mine is intermittent. Sets B-1006 code then heals itself. Of course all yer left with is a historic code and no problem.
