I also moved the amp meter to the left side of the fairing below the fuel gauge and placed the oil temp below the oil pressure. Just a matter of moving some wires around. Pretty straight forward install.
Thanks HogglyWoggly... the info about moving the gauges is exactly what I was hoping to hear.

I agree - that's why I was hoping I could do this myself... and it looks like I might give it a shot... easier for me to guarantee the bike sits long enough for everything to set, if it's in my own garage at home, than at the dealer's.

Thanks to all who responded

I did this install about a week ago. Pretty easy. I agree with connecting wires before installing the gauge in the fairing. Also, I toyed with running the wires over the tank (under console), but the wire was too short. I wish I had thought of runnning them under the tank. I went up right side of frame as per instructions

I would not use any thread locker for this application. May never get the fitting out of your oil pan, and it may leak. The recommended Locktite 565 is a high temp PTFE pipe thread sealer, not a thread locker. Stuff is different. Agree that 565 is hard to find, although every hardware store has PTFE thread tape. I considered using the tape in my plumbing toolbox, but did not. Instead, I ordered 565 from Amazon; delivered in days.

I really like having useful info re engine temp and am annoyed that HD sells bikes equipped with the dumb$%% air temp gauge.

Thanks Lowcountry Joe! I figured typical order time would be a couple of weeks. Surdyke hasn't responded to my requests for updates or to my cancellation request. Last update I received was a week ago that they were "researching my order." Looks like this will be the last time I do business with Surdyke. Should have gone with LSHD. They are cheaper and the customer service is great!

WhenI ordered an HD oil temp gauge from Surdyke about 6 weeks ago I was told it was on backorder -- and when I cancelled the order they indicated they would charge a restocking fee (for a product not in stock). WTF. I complained, they relented. Meanwhile, my local dealer told me MoCo was out of stock and so all supliers are on back order. That dealer (Patriot HD in Fairfax, Va) quickly found one in stock at another dealer usiing some kind of system search, and gave me the contact info. I had it in a few days.

I've had it with Surdyke for this and other reasons. Who is LSHD?

Lake Shore Harley Davidson. I've done a fair amount of business with them, never had an issue. Their online website isn't that great, but if you know the part number, then it's much easier to use.

I just use the lcd oil temp guage that is incorporated into the dipstick cover that harley sells. No wiring. No getting into the fairing. It works well. And I like the air temp guage.

what thread is on that crank plug? Someone said they used that hole and no oil came out when they removed, doesn't it have to be in oil for the sensor to work ?

I'm running black motosen gauges on my RKC, they sent a 3/4 sensor.

thanks

Also, here's the web site for the other gauge.......www.Parts4PowerToys.com

Cheaper then the HD one and the gauge looks like it's easier to read.
Place an order for this one Fri. Appears to be excellent quality. $112 shipped.

I'll be installing one next week. Most of what I've read says the sending unit can be installed without draining the oil. However, the HD instructions do say
to drain it. I will do mine on a lift with the front being slightly more elevated
than the rear. Also, the plug is about a 1/2" higher than the drain plug.
My guess is that with the motor running there is plenty of oil on the sensor.
The plug is pipe thread, not sure of the size.

Just pull the plug out and insert the OTG adapter quickly. You won't lose more than a few drops.
