I must be living under a rock cause the first I heard about the recall was today after I dropped my bike off at an indie to repair the fire damage apparantly caused by a failed brake switch. Last week I pulled into the parking lot at Wally World and smelt something I shouldn't be smelling. Looked down to the right and saw that the bike was on fire. As it turned out damage was limited to the wires going to the switch itself and the loom just below it, no brakes or turn lights, or cruise control plus 2 fuses. Took it in today and dropped it off but received a call right afterwards from the owner that there had been a recall on the switch and that the dealer/factory would fix it for free. YAHOO! I like free so I returned to the shop, reloaded the bike and went to the dealer. Now I'm being told they might fix it or some of it for free IF they can determine WHY it failed but since everyone is going to the beach this weekend and they are really busy, maybe next week I'll hear something. And they still wonder why I go to an indie if it's something I don't want to do myself.
I read a while back where quite a few guys had the recall done and they had to go back due to a soft pedal afterwards. My parents trike went in about a month ago for the recall. It hasnt been ridden since then. The other day i noticed a large puddle of brake fluid under it. Had to call the dealer to bring it back in. Apparently some of these dealers still can't get it right. I have no urge to bring mine in personally.
I never took mine in for the replacement either although I was aware of the recall from day one. I have a hard time with anyone else working on my bike and this recall didn't seem like that big of a deal to me so I decided I'll take my chances. So far, no problems.
Guess I didn't know bout the recall yet either, took bike in today to get the radio repaired/replaced (again)...see post in F-in HK radio skippin.
Service manager said, there is a brake switch recall that we'll fix also.
I asked the service manager ..oh you mean the one that is burning up causing brake failure because of the heat from the pipes? He grumbled and under his breath said, umm yea, something like that...Seriously? Like us HD riders are a bunch of dumb A$$ uninformed meat heads? He kinda made me feel like it was a secret or something. guess he will see my gutted cats pipe when they change it out. Oh, yea i asked what they were replacing it with, he said " a better more heat resistant switch"....Hmmm
My switched failed on my '09 RK. It threw a code, I looked it up and found out what it meant. Took it to the dealer and it was an easy, hassle-free (and quick) change-out.
NEWS FLASH UPDATE!!! I got my bike back from Chattahoochie H-D last Thursday. All repair work was covered by the factory by the recall. New brake light switch, wiring and looms. I'm a happy camper. Thank you Factory.
