Wife and I do about 25k a year on trips. I have done all sorts of mods over the years to different stock seats, memory foam etc.
About a year ago I got an air hawk. Amazing. It ain't pretty, but before after about 6-8 hours in the saddle it was no longer comfortable...not so anymore.
The stock seat on my '05 Roadie was so good that when it wore out (60,000 mi.) I found another stock seat to replace it with. The '09 EGC, not so much. Seat kinda sucks.
Never had a problem with a stock seat, on long trips I use an Alaska Leather sheep skin pad, works for me...also compression (sp) shorts help...removing wallet from back pocket...backrest and handlebars....
But a stock setup with a backrest and I can go all day....
I have the wallet answer - for the past 11 years, I have stuck with the nylon version of the Aerostitch 'world's thinnest wallets' - no more back pain attributed to the wallet. Just passing along what works...clicky here
On my '02 RK I tried a Corbin, and a Mustang. Ended up with the stock seat now for over 30K miles, including more than a few 1,000 mile non-stop rides. Works for me. Now, on the new SG, I'm not so sure about that seat. I'll try another one, but it definately seems harder and overall honestly, the bike so far isn't as comfy as my RK.
I fell for all the hype about the new Ultra seats being comfy, so I bought one.
After 60 miles I knew that sucker was coming back off and going up for sale.
I did try it for about 500 miles just to be sure, but my tailbone couldn't stand it but for 60 miles at a time.
I agree with you. Sometimes it concerns me about the new generation riders complaining about every little thing about the bike. I do appreciate all of the new features and creature comforts, but would still ride with no complaints if I had to go back. I will have to admit that I like the newer bikes because I can still travel distances like I was still in my 20's.
The road king classic stock seat is terrible. I think if I was 30 years younger I would have looked for a new seat. I took my Sundowner off to do some repairs to it and put the stock back on for a few days ... that sucked.
