02 ultra, stock except for mufflers, ride double 95% of the time. the only time i get under 40 is riding uphill against the wind. my bike isn't fast, and i don't ride it that way.
i'm getting 45 interstate riding around 65-70 mph do not understand how people get such low mpg.. maybe i'm not getting my tank full when i'm calculating it.. my pv told me i was getting 51.8 mpg the other day but i don't know if i believe that... anyway sounds pretty darned low to me
I just went from a Deuce to a Road King and am only on the 2nd tank full in the RK. But the TC88b Deuce 5-speed averaged 50.6 over my ownership. Yes, I know, not a dresser and my riding was mostly open roads. I am expecting low 40s on the RK with same kind of riding but that will become evident in time.
I get around 36 in town. A lot of stop and go and ideling. Takes 45 mintues to get the 17 miles to work. Straight driving easily in the 40's. Nothing major done. Stage 1 and have 65,000 miles on the clock.
1st Harley was an '01 Electra Glide Standard, carbureted, Stage 1, with older style SE slip-ons. Typically got 38-41 mpg depending on highway vs. non-highway speeds. Consistent highway speeds above 70ish cut mpg down to 33-35 mpg. Fresh high-octane gas, proper tire pressure, clean air filter and new spark plugs almost always improved mpg back up into "normal" range, as long as my right wrist cooperated.
Check the plugs to get an idea of what is going on because I'd agree the mileage seems low to me. Is he a really big guy or is he extremely heavy handed on the throttle? Also, the A/F ratio scale you got from the dyno when checking HP will not be helpful in this case because it will only show the wide open throttle A/F unless they were actually tuning it.
From time to time I run a few ounces of Techron through my bike to keep the fuel system clean. He might try that on a couple tanks to see if that helps. Can't hurt anything....
