My 2002 Softail will get 40 or so in town and 45 on the highway. If your buddy is only getting 32 on the highway there is a problem with how he drives or what he drives. If my MPG got that bad I would look for a leak in the tank.
Ok, this is more of a humorous reply then anything else. One thing I have noticed whenever reading these mpg threads, is that nobody ever mentions there size and weight. Sound pretty logical that an average size (185 lbs) guy is going to get better mpg then say a big ol huskey corn fed 240+ pounder is going to get.

Maybe; big guy could be a casual cruiser while the little guy may be a hard charging redline menace on the road. I totally hear what your saying, relevant conditions need to be considered when trying to make a comparison of anything.
My 99 FLHT with SE Air Cleaner, SE Perf Slip-ons, SE 203 Cams would get mid to high 40s on lazy country roads and low 40s on interstate running 70-75. Then I put a bigger Mikuni Carb on it and country roads stayed about the same but interstate riding dropped it into the mid to high 30s. I was on a Maine to Oregon ride one summer, at a dealer in Wyoming getting a rear tire and the service tech comes back from test drive and says "WOW! you got one of the good ones!"...
For what little this is worth - 2012 FLHRC Total stock 103 with just 1000 miles. The last 4 tanks were 32.4 - 35.3 - 34.8 - 37.5. The scoot still has the original oil in it yet. That will change tomorrow when I go synthetic in the engine and transmission and hopefully the mileage per gallon will go up as well with more time and mileage on the bike. 210 lbs. and I am not the gentlest with the throttle but not really a speed demon either. I could be a lot smoother though.
I have an 03 Ultra, stage 1, with saddlebag guards, tour pack guards and my 215 lbs twisting the throttle hard. I get 34-36 mpg. I smell gas sometimes, so I asked the 2 different dealers that did my 5k and 10k if they thought it was running rich, and they said plugs were good, and bike ran great.
I'd like to get it dynoed, but with having to buy a SERT and dyno time doesn't seem worth $750.
I was going to go to Fuel Moto, but figure if the only problem is a little low gas mileage don't want to mess with it.
