It will break in some. Helmets should be snug when new because of this...
Every helmet I've had in 40 years has broken in a little.

And by doing this, (or using a spoon, ball peen hamer, etc.) you are simply speeding up the breaking in process. I'd be careful with a hammer though, easy to go too far which will worsen the fit and lessen the protection of the helmet.
A helmet will only break in so far. And pushing in the styrofoam can only be done to a small extent and still be safe. Only you can decide if you should do this or get a larger helmet.
