I don't usually lock up my helmet unless I am going to be away from the bike for a long time. If I'm just going inside for lunch, I stick it on the right rearview mirror.
But if I want to lock it up, I use this inexpensive ($15-20) retractable cable lock from Kryptonite and run the cable through the D-rings of my helmet (and my wife's if she is with me) and then through the engine guard or saddlebag guard. The cable is about 2 ft long when fully extended, so I also run it down the sleeve of my leather jacket and lock it to the bike too if I don't feel like lugging it around.
Like any lock on a motorcycle, it won't stop a determined thief. Nothing will. But it will stop the opportunistic theif, or a kid.
HD sells a chrome bolt on helmet lock. Added one to my StreetGlide and to my GF's Deluxe. Put them on the engine guard. Bout $20 if I remember correctly.
I use a good ol' fashioned pair of handcuffs when in hostile territory.
One end thru the d-rings and the other around the engine guard. (I put it on the guard just above my footpeg mounts so it doesn't slide down and scratch the chrome).
Word of warning! I use the HD ones(Great product) make sure you think twice where you are going to place it then think twice again and before you secure it think twice again!
Once that baby goes on it aint coming off!
I use a gun lock that has the cable. I took a piece of shrink wrap and shrunk it over the cable part. I leave it in the saddlebag (not noticeable) and lock against the highway bars. This is nice because I can lock more than one helmet if need be with one lock.

. I have the HD lock as well. The screw heads are slotted so that one side is tapered, so like Rijan says, they screw on but not off. I put mine on the engine guard near the left floorboard, so once it's locked, I can put my half helmet over the shifter. It works well and the full retail is $18.95.
