I have both but I can't remember the last time I wore the chaps. I have a pair of jean cut leather pants that get a lot of use especially in cool or cold weather. I've never had a get off but there is a whole lot more protection with the pants. They're nylon lined to below the knees which makes them comfortable to wear with cutoffs in the heat. If we're stopping for an extended amount of time, off come the boots and pants and on with thesneakers.
From what I have read, pants are the winners for protection. Leather is king here. My belief is you protect the head first (helmet), feet next(boots), legs next (as they are next on the most injured areas) then the jacket. Austin Texas has the craziest cagers in the world - very dangerous here. I wish we could all ride in shorts, no helmet and so on as the freedom is a great feeling. You've got to consider your own environment and traffic circumstances, then figure out in your own mind if feeling the freedom outways feeling the potential pain.
FLH - went to high school in Austin 65-68 - Austin was Much smaller then,,, been back several times for High School Parties - back again in 08 for the 40th - Austin is almost too big now - and yes the cagers there are special - rented a HD a few years ago - survived and enjoyed the ride to Lake Travis -
Been riding again now for 11 years, wife and I both wear Chaps most of the time - I wear draggin jeans - wife can not find a pair she likes the "Fit" of and spending $100 on jeans that don't fit is Not her way..
I have both leather pants and chaps. I prefer the leather pants in cooler weather but the chaps are easier to get off when the weather warms up. Only problem I have now is that the pants must have shrunk. Can't get them on anymore!!!!!
I used to own a pair of leather pants and got so sick and tired of gay men hitting on me I threw them away and now wear chaps if I am wearing any leg protection. No more getting hit on by the homosexuals.[:'(]
I mostly wear textile (ballistic nylon) riding pants. These pants have padding, armor in the knees, extra layers where needed and flexible panels for more comfortable riding. You can get them as overpants, regular pants,or in mesh for summer.
Harley sells this kind of stuff but you can get a lot better prices from other manufacturers like Firstgear.
Check Newenough.com or some other online outlet it you're interested.
I wear jeans in town but out on a real run I wear Joe-Rocket pants & some times the matching jacket.
The pants are Balistic Nylon with armor BUT breathable with venting, works great in summer I just wear crazy wear shorts & colder I wear my jeans under,Works perfect.
