Most common problem isn't any of the above. Most common problem is shifting too soon and lugging the motor. Try running a little higher RPMs before up-shifting to see if that solves your issue.
you are correct on this i have tried higher rpm an no pinging but once in high gear pinging is back....anytime you give it throttle it get to higher rpm there is ping
thats pretty good as far as oil consumption. have you tried some real high octane gas, racing gas 108 or 116 octane? see if it goes away with that in a 50/50 mix. if it does you are most likely just too lean and possibly some timing issues which are supposed to get handled with the download. I'll tell you a secret, sometimes the dealer doesn't always do it , or do it right. did you get it done or previous owner?. at some point you're going to have to have the air/fuel ratio checked, and almost for sure readjusted, in some way, screamin eagle race tuner, power commander, something take your pick, but it almost definitely will be in the tuning segment of your bikes running. the good news is, if you get a competent person the bike will run much better, and not ping on ya . think you're gonna spend a little coin here, not much other choice. get it dyno'ed!!
When i first bought the bike it had a set of autolite plugs an worked fine ...i was a little concerned on if it had a down load so i took it to the dealer an they checker it over an said the bike is fine an it had the stage one down load i wanted to put a set of plugs in it so the put in a set of HD plugs it worked fine for a while an then the pinging started took it back to the dealer they daid there is nothing wrong with the bike that everything checks out fine mabey i should put the autolite back in but i never got the number off of them not sure if it was a hot plug or one step colder.....the closest dyno around here is 500 miles away
.... had it to the dealer an they said there is nothing wrong with the bike that everything checks out fine....
Ahhhhh....the world famous ride it a 1/4 mile down the road, come back, and either say 'Its fine', or 'I couldn't make it do it'. You ride it out, and bang! There it is again! You gotta love it! As somebody said, make sure you're not lugging the engine, and get a good tune! If that or a colder plug doesn't fix it, you might have to start looking at the top end...yikes! ($$$$$) Best of luck.

You definitely need to consider an aftermarket tuner like a Power Commander and get a dyno. Every bike is different and it sound like yours needs the timing adjusted in a few areas. A download from the dealer won't solve your problems.
Higher RPMs won't work. I had the same issue. No worky.
I had the Stage 1 with download tune from the dealer and it pinged badly for me as well. I then purchased a FuelMoto PCV and it made it a little better. I worked with FuelMoto to dial it in. Even better but still pinged. I was going to call FuelMoto again and dial it in even more, but instead put in a SE255 cam with the correct FuelMoto map for that configuration and no more pinging.
So get a new set of cams and PCV. You'll love it. I did.

I'm of the opinion once they take the ethanol out of the gas the complaints will go down. It's going to take everyone keeping in touch and updating older threads to properly track what's going on. When I twist the throttle hard (I mean stomp on it) I get an initial valve ping but not enough for me to say I've got a pinging problem tho.
