When I went to riding school they taught us to always hold the brake when starting the bike, ever have it in gear when you thought it was in neutral ? This prevents the emberassing lerch forward or clutch drag
so does the neutral safety switch on the 07 and newer bikes. if its in gear, won't start (unless you have the clutch pulled in)

ever read your owners manual? first thing they do is post one of them big warnings..... even before step 1.
Shift transmission to neutral before starting engine to prevent accidental movement, which could result in death or serious injury.
but, if you stall in an intersection, its a whole lot easier to just pull the clutch and start it, then roll off.... not that i've ever done that of course
Cold starts are in neutral. Warm starts usually in gear. Only because I don't like slamming the tranny into first when the idle is higher on start up.
The same here.
Start her in N and then when warmed up, don't worry about it, start it in gear w/the clutch pulled in ofcourse.
No issues and no lurching forward then.
